Question: If you don't read online journals, how do you know what type of person writes them?

Even though I dont consider myself quite so angry about it as Tek apparently is, I agree with him insomuch as saying that people who post online journals FREQUENTLY do it for attention. Not all the time, as I'm a firm believer of exceptions to every rule, however I think that Tek's point is valid. If you want a journal, that's great. I think they can be awesome ways to relieve stress, help cope, manage your life, etc. However, once a journal is posted online for all to read, it loses something. It's no longer a private, stress-relieving tool. It becomes something akin to wearing a sign around your neck saying "Look at me! I'm in angst! I need help! Tommy/Katie dumped me and I'm hurting! Give me your pity!"

Sorry if I sound harsh to all you who have them....but I think they're a waste of everyones time and webspace.

I could care less about attention, or who reads my journal for that matter. They are like forum posts, only longer and more thought out. They are to entertain and amuse. Shutup Tek.

Misc Info

imo, need to differentiate between a journal and a web log.

journal connotations include whining, linkin park lyrics, drama, etc

web logs, "blogs," are, symantically speaking, records of facts/information.

obviously, the former is annoying and retarded, but i find the latter to be interesting, useful, and often entertaining.

some time ago i had considered all sorts of online journals, diaries, and blogs to be all stupid and whining and emo etc, but the web log was redeemed for me when nearly every embedded professional reporter used them as a convenient publishing medium during iraqi freedom - ap, reuters, ridder - all of them.
i never had anything useful to tell anybody, so i never made one; however, now i occasionally posess marginally useful or interesting information, and my psu blog is a convenient and effective medium for transmission thereof to the community.
