PS2 is played on the internet.

Think about that a moment.

This. The internet will never become a peaceful, respectful place. Anonymity = harassment/trolling/flaming. Nothing can change the way people behave on the internet.

I, personally, have never seen, in game, people going off on a women like that. From BF series, CS - CS:S, WOW, EVE Online, COD or the dozen of other games I've played on PC, in all the years I've played.

Is this a bigger problem on consoles?

At the same time, I see very little difference between calling a woman a 'slut' and calling a guy a '***'. Between 'get back in the kitchen' and 'I fucked your mum'.

It happens, but guys get just as much shit slung at them.

True. Find a friendly, good outfit. Communicate with the people in your outfit, ignore the morons.

= fun times!

Its a touchy subject but i dont really have a strong stance on the matter. Words are words, you only give them power. So having an insult thrown my way never really bothers me. Usually that is because the other person is now in a respawning screen.

And it is a really slippery slope when you starts banning people for offensive language since who deems what as offensive? It really is subjective.

At first when this game is in beta stage there are no trolls at all I would assume. Then the players will be probably more mature than in any other stage of the game.

Some things that should help a lot when the game finally comes out:
-No communication at all between different factions, no voicechat, no textmessages.
-Allow squad leaders, or other commanders, to kick people out their squad (talk).
-Allow people to mute a certain player clientside. This because it is the most easy way to ignore people in the general teamchat, without having to kick them. (No commanders should be able to kick player out their team, at least not on their own, because that would give him too much power which could be abused, only server admins should have the rights to kick people.

I think over time most trolls will get away, and we can only play with mature acting(!) people.

At first I wanted to say that I'm against such a severe measure, but thinking about it I came to a conclusion, that such a thing can be a toggleable option.

Fortunatly, another 15 people in those platoons would jump at that guy and give him the boot.

I feel sorry for the other people to think that they can feel better by trying to bully a stranger over then internet, but there are a lot of lonely, desperate people out there, I guess.

Anyways, getting harrassed an average of once every four years makes for a pretty good community. I think the first 6 months will be rough, then the entitled whiners will move on to the next big thing.
Hey man you can roll with my guys anytime. I am disgusted to hear that someone is that iggnorant and immature to poke at a disability. It seems you got it figured out though. He is the one with issues and is damn lucky he is hiding behind a computer screen or I would whoop his ass. What doesn't kill you makes you stronger. Thanks for being part of this community and message me anytime if you want some friendly mature gamers to play with when the game comes out.

Cheers mate

Re: Stomp on harrassment from the start

To be perfectly honest, I'd try react the same way as if a male was getting bashed without reason.
Donning the knightly armour can be just as condescending, after all, it shows you subscribe to the notion that the "victim" is in some way incapable of handling the situation, purely based on gender, and not the situation in question.

But, I dislike smacktalk where it isn't needed nor wanteed, so i tend to shy away from public voice chats, and generally try to surround myself with people i find i like, so smacktalk never becomes an issue. If it does, you have a bunch of people to help you if something hits a sore-spot, which, it can do from time to time.

Usually, if i do try to help someone I don't know, i'm unaware of their sex either way.
If i do know them, I'd react the same regardless of gender, faith, skintone, etc., of either the aggressor or the victim.

I agree with Top Sgt, prejudice of any kind is something i actively try to either avoid or combat, mainly because I feel noone should be harassed doing something they enjoy.

What will ultimately matter in my reaction, isn't your real-life persona, but whether youre in a Gimp suit, Barney suit, or a Smurf

So I might engage in some tongue-in-cheek smacktalk, but if so, I'd try to make sure everyone involved is aware that, were they to strike up a chat with me, I'd hold no animosity towards them and be as friendly as.. as. .a.. hm.. ..you get the idea.
Unless, of course, they gave me a very good reason to dislike the person they turned out to be outside the in-game smacktalk, like attacking someones real-life persona, be it gender, skintone, disabilities, so on.

At the end of the day, I can only try to be the person i want to be, and let people be the person they want to be. I can't and i won't try to change anyone. But I hope they don't expect they can act like an arse, and not gather the animosity of those they piss off/on. ;o

Competitive "it's all fun and games" trash talk is one thing and something I 100% support. Making fun of a disability, as I talk about above, is a whole different topic and something very low I take offense to.

Re: Stomp on harrassment from the start

The #1 problem that is discussed in that article relates to Console games. Fact is a very large portion of the console gaming community is like this.

Part of why i refuse to be a console gamer.

As to the PC MMO crowd, i don't think it applies as much. I have been in a lot of clans/guilds/corporations/outfits that have women and do not accept that kind of behavior.

I have left guilds that allow that kind of stuff, or racist remarks, excessive swearing, and other things like that. A few times it was a hard decision because they were top of the heap guilds.

I have already limited my clan choices in PS2 because the clan i was considering applying to, that i think is going to be a huge dominating force in PS2 had some unfortunate stuff going on in their forums.

When you check out a guild's forums and the leader is using racial slurs and it is filled with swearing, it just doesn't seem like the place for me.

There is no way to avoid bigotry and stupidity, but you can limit your exposure. Sometimes it means you are not in the best guild, sometimes it means you are missing out on some parts of the game. But overall it is worth it to surround yourself with people that have good character.

I take it that means we wholeheartedly agree

If the clan acts like that, and condones it, they'd never be considered "the best" in my book, regardless of what the numbers say - arses will never come first in any race.
