If the SOE team hasn't figured this out already (I'm sure you have), you've just figured out a new, highly profitable business model.
The model where you give a shit about your community, and as a result, they become a gigantic, free marketing tool for EVERY SINGLE GAME YOU WILL EVER RELEASE. You've taken what Blizzard does, which is release good stuff, and added on people who talk to us about their passion and their development. Now it's not just marketing, but it's also recruitment. People, I KNOW, have actually told me that they're considering moving out to Cali to apply for jobs in the business, and they'll be applying to SOE as well, whereas before this they wouldn't have gone near them. Planetside 2 and it's dev team have done more than just make a game we all want. They may very well have salvaged what was a decaying and nearly unanimous perception of a dying company, and turned it into an evolved business. "SOE is evolving! It turned into AWESOME SAUCE! It's SUPER EFFECTIVE!!!"

Ever since I was a young child, my best friend and I always had long, late night talks about video games. We eventually decided that we wanted a massive game where taking control of bases actually gave you the resources you would need to keep going. It is like SOE read our minds and brought us this sure-to-be fantastic game.
I love SOE and I cannot wait to give them money to buy the "Higby's Hair" customization option. |

I know that this game will be one of my all time favorites (like PS 1). I hope that everyone at SOE knows how much I appreciate them working on Planetside 2. You guys are the best and I thank you, with all the hard work SOE has been doing this game will be one of a kind. Keep up the great work and make Planetside 2 all it could be!

I want to take a moment to say thank you also. I really love the way your dev team has really been involved in the community, the way they listen to us the fans. When hamma was doing his AGN broadcast where higby and arclegger and everybody was in his office and hamma mentioned some idea they were actually talking about implementing it right there on the broadcast. I mean thats REAL. The thing that really grabs me about this whole project is how real it is and how the developers are putting their hearts behind this project and they not only care about it but seem to love what they do and the game shows it. Its got depth, its got great graphics, its got scalability in the engine so that it still runs and looks good years down the road, it even has all these fans super excited about the game before its even released. I think what youve done here will go down in the annals of gaming history as a milestone that all other companies should strive to achieve.
Like the guy above was saying youve discovered a brilliant marketing tool as well as business strategy, and the crazy thing is all you had to do was put a human face on your product and listen to the fans which are just basic things all companies should do. The only thing that makes me sad is that not every game project is like this. I think the gaming industry as a whole got caught up in becoming the new hollywood, and i think thats a mistake. Stick to your roots gaming industry and take notes from SOE. THIS is how a game should be promoted and run. Thanks SOE dev team and everybody for all your hard work, dedication and giving us one of the most kick ass games ever.Sincerely, Thank you! Last edited by Shinjorai; 2012-07-27 at 11:32 AM. |

they have read my mind a long time ago! they also did it with ps1. at that time i had the dream of a fps game that had interior fighting and outside fighting and even vehicles and aircrafts, all together in one big gameworld! damn, back in 2003 no game even came close to my fantasies! then soe made planetside! and it even was sience fiction on top of all my fantasies! bulls eye! and now, they are doing it again with ps2! but what really got me, is the amazing dev team and their unique way of keeping the community involved! keep it up, and you have the most powerful and loyal community in the gaming world!

SOE has done a fantastic job!
Having followed the development of plenty of games (as I'm sure most of you have), I'd even use the word "refreshing," to describe what has felt like a very engaging and open approach. I don't think I've ever encountered a more interactive team... from Smedley on through the various "public" developers. Last edited by typhaon; 2012-07-27 at 02:09 PM. |
