Actually, plenty of times the sperm don't make it. There's a heavy acid thing inside the vagina that kills most sperm. The ones that live are the ones that move to the center and let their buddies absorb the acid. Then, even if they do fertilize, plenty of times it's not fertilized at the right time, and the fertilized egg is flushed right at the start.
