A small cosmetic reward, like a badge or something

A lot of us are/were attached to what is the fading away PS1.

Set up a museum we can visit after beta and launch. Haha.

Ok, beret cap is cool too...

No you are. All the PS1 vets will indeed have the ability to run around in costumes should they allow it. As will every other player because something like that would likely be in the cash shop.

On-Topic:

It's super selfish but I still say the coolest thing they could do (for me at least) is allow me to somehow keep my merits. Merits/Achievements however useless they may be I always end up enjoying getting them no matter what game.

(Excluding some of the ones in WoW that actually gave you a reward, although I got a lot of those too lol)

I can understand the sentiment, but it leaves quite the bitter taste in my mouth that if vets get something, I'll be kept away from it by virtue of the fact I didn't know about PS1. If I HAD, I'd have been all over that game.

I know it's just a personal reason, but it really starts to get to you when you keep being excluded from things by virtue of the fact you didn't know about it or were too young to play it. If I was to say anything, I'd say don't do it. Even if I WAS a vet, I'd still disagree with it.

Regardless of how innocent it may be, it still creates a rift in the community of some kind. And I'm 110% against the idea of keeping your old names, that's just denying new players. It might have been YOUR name, but it's a new game. You wouldn't expect to keep your WoW name when moving to TOR, why do that here?

I don't want any sort of reward either, but this... come on. Names actually mean something to people in PS1. We know each other as friends, rivals, etc. They're not just a throwaway item like they are in RPGs.

The new players can deal with it. I highly doubt making my character's name ZulthusVS will piss off the newbs.

Names mean something to a lot of people. I've played plenty of games, and a grand total of once has my preferred name been taken. I just moved on and picked a new one.

I'm sure PS1 had a great, somewhat (given the scale) close-knit community. But why do you think that it's okay to completely remove someone's chance of getting a name they want?

They literally have no chance. Say someone wanted to be, I don't know, sniper777. But that guy from PS1 gets his name reserved. Will the would-be sniper777 be angry about it? Probably not. But why should he not even get the CHANCE? Because he missed out on PS1, a game a very small portion of the population knew about?

I'm sure I sound like a whiny new guy, but the idea just doesn't sit well with me.

Yes, I do. First come, first serve. We've been waiting for this game for a long time, and it's only fair that us who have stayed with it should get the small token of keeping our name. Some new guy shouldn't be able to waltz in and take it. It may be easy for you to pick a new name but for many of us it means a lot.

Naturally name reservation will not sit well with new players. However some of us have used our games names for the for the past 9 years and this has led to relationships (friends and foes) being built up, communications built up in outfits etc.

Planetside 2 is indeed a new game how ever it is also a sequel, and should in my opinion have some continuity in terms of community relationships.

Lots of the new guys (by the way i love new guys) lack the understanding of how much of a relationship you build up over 9 years in planetside. Through no fault of there own, i'm sure there will be planetside 2 players that hadn't been conceived when the original was released even your current 15 year old cod kiddie would have been a mere 6 years old.

To add: we do not know how the naming system will work but it is likely to be only on the server you join and there are likely to be lots of servers, personally i'd like a server called werner so the Euro VETs have a home to naturally flock to should they wish.

I don't think I understand. It feels like you're trying to say I don't care about names. I do. I think people deserve to make their own memories with the names that may or may not have been used by someone they've never met, and someone they probably never WILL meet.

It's a token of appreciation between the company and loyal fans. I'm not saying it isn't. But it's a bit of a kick in the teeth to new guys who want to have a name they had no idea someone else had. I'm not saying that you mean "tough luck for new guys", I'm saying that's what I'm getting out of it, and, to me at least, it comes off as almost hostile.

With all due respect, that feels like a cop-out. We can't understand connection to a title you have by virtue of the fact we didn't form that connection in this particular game?

I don't mean to come off as aggressive or a troll. All I'm trying to do is play a little bit of Devil's advocate and point out that reserving names might be unfair to new players.

Name reservation without a doubt, whoever has the name on emerald right now (priority was given based on creation date I believe) is the only fair way to do it.

People have reputations that have been developing over the lifetime of Planetside, they need that name because they had it first.

If that name isn't claimed within the pre-launch timeframe, then by all means, they didn't take steps to guarantee that they secured the name. What I'm suggesting is a statute of limitations on the time that you can claim the name you had back on the PS1 servers.

This is not a carte blanche name reservation, it's more like a retention of a name you currently control. If it were an all out name reservation with no control over the name historically the reservation system could be used for griefing.

In terms of what I personally would like to see has been mentioned earlier, a couple of veteran exclusive cosmetic items that are only available to PS1 players and will remain exclusive to PS1 players. I wasn't all that keen on lowres throwback armour, I'm not saying it's not a cool idea, but it's not something I'm interested in. I'd rather have stuff that references Planetside meta-history and locations that do not exist in PS2 that were big in PS1.

Doesn't really matter our opinion anyway (especially your's lol), SOE is going to do what they want but Smed and Higby said the vets would be taken care of.
I'm sorry? Especially mine? It's obvious that if I continue any sort of conversation with you, I'll be shafted by "lul, u weren't here when i wuz". Good job, you've been very welcoming. At least the other two had the decency to address my opinion in a mature manner, you just write it off as invalid because I didn't play PS1.

Vets getting things by virtue of the fact they're vets would be much more agreeable if people like you didn't feel the need to alienate those of us that DIDN'T get to enjoy the original.

As for your other points, they've paid thousands for Planetside. This is Planetside 2.

They've paid the company for PS1, what the company did was up to them, and they decided on PS2. I feel infinitely more grateful to SOE and those vets that take the time to address new player concerns than I do to you.

Opinions often can change how a game will turn out, even a beta or alpha game. TOR had several changes made to balancing post-release because people acknowledged it. And there are plenty of ways to take care of vets that doesn't directly affect new players.
