They don't have the visuals down for it to happen. The faction designs are so goofy that it's hard to be immersed in the universe.

TR - 50's Sci-fi movie costume. Goggles.
VS - The villains in that crappy 50's Sci-Fi movie.

Pretty hard for a universe with that design to explode.

Well, maybe I agree that the design is a bit peculiar, but at least it has character to it. I'm very glad that they chose to retain that rather than going for that terrible ho-hum space-marine generic sci-fi look that 90% of sci-fi games seem to go for these days. PS2 definitely has a retro-feel to it, but I don't think that is too bad actually. At the very least to be a hit you have to be distinguishable from the crowd, and taking the generic sci-fi-look aproach would certainly not be the way to do that.

I'm assuming right now that you are talking about the default armor that everyone starts with, because there's a reason why it looks bad... so you buy cosmetics. Buy the composite helmet and armor for your chosen class and you'll see what the actual armor design for PS2 is, which in my opinion is some of the best looking scifi armor out there(at least for TR, I don't pay too much attention to NC and VS).
