Do you know what a Teaser is?

I guess I don't see the big deal when it comes to trailers I mean, a countdown for a trailer? Seems a bit over-hyped in my opinion.

I love the game and what it's shaping up to be for sure but hyping a cinematic trailer seems kind of strange to me.

As a customer, I don't ever base my opinions of games on trailers, I prefer hyping gameplay. To each their own though

I totally will, I am looking forward to it, but it feels like trailers like this are more of a tease.

Releasing this trailer alone without some push for something like open beta or preorders or something is rude.

I agree with your original point about you guys need to advertize more, but releasing on this press and coverage and then turning around like E3 and saying "well we will see you in the coming weeks" is frustrating as hell.

Please don't build up if you don't have anything to show for awhile. I understand you guys wanna build up critical mass up to release to get big numbers of people to play and stay with the game. Please take this as concern and not as an attack. I am very excited about this game coming out.

So funny how people complain about no marketing for PS2...

And then they start marketing with this amazing CGI trailer and people are like....

WHO IS THIS FOR!!>! blarg

Undeadkitty has a great point and goes back to what I was trying to say as well. Does advertising a trailer with no real other information actually net more players? I'd think advertising more gameplay and game features would out perform a trailer on that front any day of the week. Unless of course SOE actually released some good information with the trailer.

I'm surprised to hear some think they need to advertise more and the trailer is the way to do it. I've seen more information about PS2 without even knowing what it was (thank you E3!) than any other game. Even games I've been heavily interested in before/during beta rarely have as much out there as PS2 does right now. Again though, my opinion really means nothing since I don't know any real information or have any real numbers =P Just my personal experience.

I think that the trailer is there to make people want to see actual gameplay, and gameplay we have hours and hours and its not even beta yet. I absolutely have sat there and watched the teaser fifteen times over the past couple of days. Love it.

Who made this trailer? Who were the CGI creators of this?

Please read before you Derp all over the place.

Gameplay trailers are better at showing the game.

Minecraft sold millions just from youtubers playing it

Might work for TV, but trying to appeal to CoD or Halo players doesn't work

This Trailer has alot of Asian market elements that work for them.

I've listed this stuff in the main posts

EDIT: The best advertizing SOE has done so far is what they have already done with TotalBiscut.

More of this kind of stuff would be much better.

Re: Who is the CG Trailer for?

Sledge, the trailer is neat no doubt about it. I'm just surprised that it's things like that that get people to want to see the game.

I just find that trailers for most games show next to nothing about what makes a game good or bad.

An example would be Diablo 3's trailer. It won awards and everything. They had TV commercials with it in there. None of it made me want to actually purchase the game or play it. It didn't even make me want to go check out the game. It showed nothing about the game and why I should go check it out. The actual gameplay and features made me want to play the game but I only knew of those things because I was a previous fan of the series.

I am much more likely to purchase a game that advertises with a mix of gameplay/cinematic. Heck, if I were to just see a trailer of PS2 at E3, I probably would not even be here today. Instead though, they showed what the game was all about and made me want to see more... and more... and now my hair is falling out That's thanks to gameplay footage and great coverage of the actual game, not some 30 second CGI that looks neat but really tells me nothing about the game other than it's about war.

At the end of the day though, if the cinematic brings in people then it's all good either way

At the beginning of the trailer you see a guy run to the edge of a cliff and what he sees below is an amazing base being attacked by hundreds of people. That first scene is about the planetside newb getting his first look at a massive battle. Then they quickly introduce the factions and you get a little peak at vehicles and infantry classes. I mean what else can you do in thirty seconds.

Re: Who is the CG Trailer for?

I admit, I'm kinda surprised that no one has even mentioned the additional "free" advertising this will get. How many people will tweet the link to the trailer? How many people will post it on facebook? Email? How many MMO players, or FPS players, or gamers who wish there was a better PvP option will say "hmm, that might be fun, I'll google it".

Once they know the name, they will see alpha footage on youtube, check out game play mechanics here, or other PS2 sites, and then learn it's F2P and "no risk" to try it. Likely many will. Of those a percentage will stay. Of those, a percentage will buy things, and that is revenue that keeps the game going for all of us.

I played SOE games for years, and some how never knew that Planetside (1) even existed until 2005! Even then, it was a complete accident that I found out. Having people know the game's name means more people will look at it, and maybe even try it.

This is true, but it isn't necessarily better marketing. For better or worse, many, many games have better sales due to the existence of CGI trailers (I also think they do better with both CGI and gameplay trailers, but one does not preclude the other and we've had quite a few gameplay videos already published).

Might work for TV, but trying to appeal to CoD or Halo players doesn't work
I don't see why it doesn't work. Especially with the whole: "BTW, it's free!" I mean, it's possible that some console die-hards won't have a gaming PC (or one that's good enough) but that doesn't mean they won't be interested in the game. In any event, Halo and CoD players aren't the only ones that watch TV (again, for better or worse) that might be interested in FPS games like PS2.

EDIT: The best advertizing SOE has done so far is what they have already done with TotalBiscut.

I agree, but I also understand the benefits of CGI trailers to drum up interest from a wider market.

CGI trailers work. Sure it won't work for Halo and CoD players. Derp. They don't own gaming PCs.

These things are made to be badass. They get a lot of views and easily spread in the gaming world. It an also be used as a Ad on websites and on TV. It can be the intro cutscene for the game. It looks like it is going to teach the viewer about each faction. So it could be helpful there.

There is a lot of things this will do and lets face it none of us here has ever done the marketing for a triple A PC title. The video alone got 450k views. I don't even know what IGN's version of it got to. That is more than some of TB's video and more than most videos on the PS2 channel. I think it is working.

This will also make easy news for gaming websites come July 25th. They love this kind of stuff.
