The Marine Corp is the only branch where all officers have to lead men in the field. At least you'd have respect for your superiors.

I'm pretty sure those numbers are correct, and I'm positive Army basic isn't 13 weeks.

The Air Force's bmt is 6 weeks plus something called Zero week, where you in-process and get your gear. Realistically this makes it 7 weeks, because the Instructors are in your face and training you from day 1. Goarmy.com says Army BMT is 9 weeks, but I suspect one of those might be like Air Force zero week. Trying to make it sound more hard-core by counting zero week for one service and not for the other is lame, imo.

My father went through Marine Enlisted boot in the late 70s, according to him, that is the most accurate portrayal of boot there is. As for no physical contact with recruits, I know for a fact that it happens on a very regular basis. It's not condoned per say, but it happens. I'm sure my kid brother will have something to say to anyone who says otherwise.

I'd love to see some proof of this, as I've never seen nor heard of any Marines being trained by the IDF. None of the Marines who have been to or are in the Gulf (For either the first or the current war) had any training with Israel.

Don't get me wrong, I have nothing but the utmost respect for the Israeli Defense Force, but our Marines don't need training from the IDF to be effective in what they do.

I was sitting here thinking the same thing.

Ignorance is bliss I suppose.

These Marine units are irregular units that are quite similar to those named above.
Force Recon
Scout/Sniper Teams
Detachment 1 (Marine Raiders)
F.A.S.T. (Fleet Anti-Terrorist Security Team)

This is on top of the fact that Marines are regarded as the elite of the regular armed forces (We're talking regular units, not the so-called special units)

The biggest advantage Marines have is the fact that every Marine is trained as a rifleman first. Every Marine from the Commandant to the lowliest private is trained to be a fire his or her rifle true and take ground an inch at a time if necessary. It doesn't matter what your MOS is. I'll be a pilot for the Corps soon, but a rifleman first, no Marine ever forgets this. In fact, every possible job you could have as a Marine is in support of those Marines that are trained solely as 03xx's (Infantry) and if there ever comes a time during war when your job isn't needed, you'll be handed your rifle and sent up front.

It's reasons like these that make me relish the fact that I'll be a Marine. I'd rather be leading a platoon of Marines through the nastiest ground imaginable than join the Army and do something I'd love like flying.

So what's your plan on joining? Are you going through the PLC program or straight to BT and then TBS?

Doin the PLC program. I'm already Pro-Rec'd for being an SNA, so it's just a matter of graduating next spring, then off to OCS, TBS after that, then to lovely Pensacola.
