Yes, I agree. I played BF2 and now BF3. Sometimes I read on the EA/UK forums, but it is like a black hole of negativity.
Sometimes I think some people think they are fighting a real war in BF2/BF3 or ARMA. Not sure if that is sad or ridiculous.

I am totally looking forward to Planetside 2, also because of its Scifi theme. I don't see why every game must be modern military themed.

Exactly, besides, the future is so much cooler then the shitty present.

Who needs semi-realistic modern warfare when you have immortality by cause of tiny robots, mechanized armored exosuits, and 12 barrel miniguns( <3 12 barrels). Ya, I'd rather live in the future.

Most of the time I am open to options and opinions, but I have to agree that there is no reason we should take the OP's concerns seriously. Either like the Planetside theme or don't, your choice. Don't let the door hit you on your way out.

If the game isn't sufficiently successful in number of players, it won't survive. While that's extremely unlikely to happen, there's another thing -if it's successful enough to survive, but not VERY successful, other game companies won't want to compete.

That's reason enough to care about a potentially large amount of players, I think.

So apparently he thinks that sci-fi elements aren't as popular because he asked a community based around a game set in modern times ... sample bias much?

Again, someone not understanding the point. This is about getting more players to help fund the game, not fighting against sci-fi theme. I am not against sci-fi, and neither is this thread, it's about the fact that sources of players, ie the players of other games, are in fact biased, and how do we get around it?

Even if you don't care on that score, you should care about whether the game will have enough players to get funded. SOE cares, undoubtedly.

Do you want to end up like World War 2 Online where a lot of the people are paying hundreds more than a subscription would cost, some even thousands, as donations just to keep it alive? Not that this would happen, but why not be sure it doesn't?

Seriously people, listen to Stardouser! He is one of the best forum posters you can find here and on the EAUK BF3 forums (Hi star!), also he has a good point. I have a few friends who are on this very boat.

They like FPS games and the thought of an MMOFPS has them interested, they just think/fear that the game would turn into a "Star Trek FPS". I have one of them semiconverted to try out the TR faction (suprise).

Theres absolutly no point doing that. You like the theme/are OK with it, or not.

The idea of a Star Trek FPS is ridiculous, this game is nowhere NEAR that, and yet you are right, that is truly what some people think.

How do we relieve them of that burden of false impression? That's what we could be discussing here, if people could stop saying "if they don't like it we don't want them".

Well there is the fact that the majority of gamers aren't members of your biased community which represents just a fraction of a fraction of the total possible people who will hear about Planetside. What you've got there is a case of the vocal minorities, most people don't care either way and as such will not post.

Want to know the sillyness in this? That same person loved BF2142, but isn't interested in "Planet Trek 2" .

Battlefield sold 11 million copies. Now, you may not believe in sampling, but I do. As I said already - most of the guys on Mordor are against casualization, and for that they are labeled a "hardcore minority". Now, I do not agree with that assessment, I think that a very large percent of BF's players agree with us on casualization. But put that aside for a moment. The people I see on Mordor who are skeptical of sci-fi theme are coming from both the casualization opponents AND supporters. Even if you think that anti-casualization players are a vocal minority, you have to admit that there might be something to this sci-fi thing if there are sci-fi skeptics on both sides. After all, supposedly the casuals ARE the majority overall, even if not at Mordor's forums, right?
