Again, theme issues, and gameplay issues are two different things. We already know that PS is taking gameplay cues from BF3 and MW3. This discussion has nothing to do with that.

This is not a troll. You're welcome not to participate in the thread.

It sure as hell seems like it in a non subtle sort of way. People are either gonna like PS2 or not. Trying to downplay the core of the game to appeal to other people is asinine. If they want a modern MMOFPS they can wait till Dice makes one.

Hardly trolling my good sir, if you would just stop and think as a non PS2 fan you might understand his message better. I have friends who liked BF2142 that's PS style futuristic right there, but they think PS2 is all pew pew phasers when that is not the case.

That right there is lost revenue, lost people who would have most likely liked the game but moved on because of misinterpretation of the IP as a whole.

You act as if I mean downplay as in, for the DEVS to downplay it, which I thought we got past that incorrect assumption 6 pages ago.

Let me put a positive spin on it, then : Instead of saying downplay let's say, Let's emphasize what it has in common with NON-sci-fi shooters. Guns still fire bullets, etc.

BF2142 was inspired by PS1. If not a direct answer to it by dice.

This topic is silly. I want a PS1 Sequel, not another BF with larger engagements ( Sadly, that's what we seem to be getting anyway. ).

The people I see on Mordor who are skeptical of sci-fi theme are coming from both the casualization opponents AND supporters. Even if you think that anti-casualization players are a vocal minority, you have to admit that there might be something to this sci-fi thing if there are sci-fi skeptics on both sides. After all, supposedly the casuals ARE the majority overall, even if not at Mordor's forums, right?
The problem with sampling is it is entirely unreliable because people will always have bias, you asked a very specific community forum thus rendering your "sample" entirely moot. Nice try though.

If they are that closed minded in regards to a game that has lasers its their own dam fault and tbh its probably best they don't come play PS2. Any player who is thoroughly interested in a game or wants to find out about it will do it on his own through his own research. All of this will take care of itself in time when videos start coming out of 2000 player battles. I am not worried about PS2 not making profits because its going to as long as the devs do not do something stupid and jack the game up.

That doesn't matter though. We, or at least SOE, WANT the players from other games to come here. The fact that they may be biased is a challenge to be overcome, instead of saying "well, they're biased, so let's just not do anything at all".

If SOE didn't want players from these games they wouldn't be adopting modern FPS aspects.

And the sample, of course, is relevant to Battlefield. Not the entire FPS community across ALL games. I'm not suggesting that it's relevant to anything but BF3's 11 million.

Inspired? Perhaps, direct answer? Hardly. Also, me and Star want a sequel to PS1, where did you get the idea we want Planetfield 2? We just want to bust some misconceptions about the PS IP. Is that really wrong is some way? To give people the whole picture of the IP rather than pew pew lazers?

Please... tell them to go watch a video of the PS2 and they should more than find things that it has in common with a modern Non-Scifi shooter. If they can't see that in the Alpha footage of the game from GDC they are idiots.

You're making a very big assumption there. These people are not necessarily closed-minded. Perhaps you're forgetting that PS2, while it may be a unique game in terms of world size, is still a shooter, and as such, has a lot of competition in various ways. You see, I am not just referring to the stalwart sci-fi haters that won't be convinced no matter what we say. Those people you can say are closed minded, I would agree.

I am also referring to the people who, if we went around to forums pushing PS2, that our message would in fact be the first thing they've ever heard about the game. How best to deliver that message. Why should we scare them off by letting the first word be something about warp gates, or, well, you know what I mean?

This is the problem. You're acting like the Sci-Fi elements are something that the game should be ashamed of. Warp gates are awesome, and if that's a deal breaker for people then those people were never going to be interested in the game no matter how you introduced the game to them.

"Perhaps some of you who are good at making comparison videos or screenshot montages would be interested in putting something together that emphasizes the non-futuristic aspects?"

I've got a better idea...
When/if you get into beta, get yourself a copy of FRAPS and make your own video promoting the awesome spectacle and epic-ness of PS2, and downplaying its sci-fi tropes.
You clearly have an idea of what you think other communities desire.
Do it yourself.
Or, take ownership of the problem and when beta starts, get together a bunch of like-minded people who agree with you and do it yourself.

I think your idea holds merit, but you've approached it from the wrong direction.
