Remember, "having a beta key" and "being admitted into beta" are two separate things. The beta keys are useless until SOE flags them for access, obviously, because no one has been admitted to beta yet. They could very, very easily send out emails to all current PS1 subscribers that contain active beta keys and get them into the beta immediately - then in a few days, they hit the button for all the keys generated for the facebook giveaways, magazines, and planetside2.com signups - or something like that. That's how I'm imagining it.
Compare it to an iTunes giftcard. Yeah, you can have as many codes as you want, but they're useless until you take them to the front and the cashier activates them. We simply don't know anything about how the beta admission process will work - patience and faith, comrades.

I think part of the random giveaway though is, as said, the advertising. Most folks on here will be (at very least) trying the game asap. They need a LOT more people interested.
Remember? - that was one of the faults of the first one: It wasn't advertised/pushed much. (It also needed broadband when they it was rare and a pretty ninja pc too, but I digress.) If they got a lot of folks interested in this it's only going to be a good thing. If the games making them good money it will be developed and worked on more. Pretty sure most here are vets - these keys are to randoms but no-one's actually playing yet.... |
