I sure hope so, man. No pressure.

I realize this is getting dangerously far into specifics of the engine, but does the server-side have some capacity to "call BS" (for lack of a more technical discussion) on client updates?

Like if I report to the server that I've traveled 1km east in .1 seconds, might the server notice anything.... fishy about that and deal with me accordingly? Like flag or ban me?

I've never personally had any trouble with VAC. But if they can't do Steam, I think I'd rather not have Punkbuster (from the same PC Gamer Mag as PS2 frontcover: http://www.pcgamer-magazine.com/pcga...204?pg=14#pg14)

I don't know what all the whining is about. I've never had an issue with punkbuster.

wow, its like deja vu. i have seen and heard all this before and punkbusters is good news to a hacker. very easy to bypass, also bans players for no reason at all. detected xfire as a hack and banned 100s of legit players, myself included.

mite as well use the honor system.

The only hack prevention program i have seen work well is VAC,also picks up macros

For the love of all that is good in the world, do not use PB, PLEASE

1) It runs on your system even when you're not playing any games
2) It has done more harm than good in every game it's been on
3) Doesn't work well, at all

I think I saw Higby talking about PB isn't the only card up their sleeves...

The only real question I have is if it designates Teamspeak and Teamspeak Overlay as a hack adn will autoban you?

The TS overlay issues were fixed recently, though it is a definite concern. PB goes through horrible phases of being a monster and fucking up everyone's day every time they update it, then it gets fixed incredibly slowly.

The issue is, pb only really works to stop the unsophisticated attempts at hacking, the ones that just hook in and don't attempt to bypass pb at all. Those hacks get picked up by pb but the more sophisticated exploits work around both PB and VAC very easily. If you're able to pick up the things that work around PB/VAC with whatever "other things up sleeves" then you're able to pick up the less sophisticated things, so what's the need for pb?

Ultimately, as I keep saying, the big issue is hackers using hacks to appear legitimate, they're absolutely impossible to tell the difference between them and simply a very good player and it shifts the skill level bell curve massively right and makes the "average" players appear like crap players and completely shuts out the below average players, the net effect is less people want to play because it's not as fun. The skill bell curve remaining true and correct is really important.

If you don't catch those kinds of hackers attempting to appear legitimate through automatically picking them up and banning them then they will ultimately ruin the game by shifting the skill level and just generally being hacking cunty cunts. /british

But it's -a- card, and it can do a lot of harm even if it isn't their most important aspect of anti-cheat policy.

I think a lot of it is going to come down to how much of the net-code is handled client side vs server side, we will really have to wait and see how they have things structured before we can really judge whether their anti-cheat systems are moot or not.

punkbusters is garbage ..... i had the same debate when testing APB.... HACKERS MADE HISTORY WITH THAT GAME. that game was offline in under 90 days because of hackers. and then was sold off in under 3 months to the slum lords of the gaming industry gamersfirst , and is still filled with hackers to this day, even more now because its free to play.

When i think of punkbusters , i think of generic, cheep, bottom of the barrel. its shet in my eyes and only f2p games use it because they cant afford anything else.

Interesting choice of description - you might want to look again at the list of games using it.

The only problem i know of is the stupid bans for overlays and other programs running behind the scenes like Team speak.

This is 2012 we run like a zillion things at once and PB needs to stop worrying about that.
