Epic SOE Memories on Planetside's Ninth Anniversary

Article on Massively
"Though the word "epic" is overused in MMO discourse, it's a recurring theme here. Due to the size, scope, and sheer ambition on display in the original PlanetSide, it's actually appropriate too. While you're reminiscing with the devs, take a stroll through our side-by-side gallery that compares vehicles and equipment from the original PlanetSide with their counterparts in PlanetSide 2."

Dave Georgeson
"We were getting ready to launch Aftershock. The Auraxis construct was prepping to twist itself into subspace tunnels, pushing the continents across the cosmos to different planets, yet leaving them connected.

It was cool and the players didn't know what was coming. But we foreshadowed the planetary reconfigure by triggering earthquakes and dropping asteroids on the planet, manually. At first, we didn't have any automated way to do the barrages and every day, at random parts of the day, I would search the world for combat hot spots and then manually trigger barrages of space rocks and increasingly large earthquakes, unleashing my little slice of randomness on the unsuspecting players."

Some nice side by side shots,
Does this not look too front heavy? lol

heard hundreds of storys like that, and it is always great because everybody had moments like this.
but hearing those storys from the devs is even better

reminds me, that the devs are also big fans of the original like we are. and for the same reasons as well!

yea ,like the story of running into a CC and knifing all 5 defenders and farming ppl with a boomer on the flightdeck of a tech plant for 45 minutes

that shit must have happened on Werner because on Emmy or Markov someone would have spawned a reaver and spammed the tech plant deck and in the case of the CC fantasy, she might have got one maybe two but the other three would have TK'd everyone in the room to kill her.

Well the boomer farm was close to launch and even on Emerald you might run in to a CC and find everyone there AFK.

Nice comparison images. A great way of marking how much has changed and how much has stayed the same with the designs.

Who is Dave Georgeson btw ? I checked fast on google and he seemed to be mostly an EQ guy. If he did Aftershock, he must have been around a while and switched to EQ dev.

Andrew "rogue13" Risch: A tank had rolled into my tech plant and blasted away the folks in the courtyard. The driver popped out and started to run for the front door. I leveled my rifled at him and pow - headshot. I smiled when I saw the name of who I had just killed. It was Smed
Headshots in PS1 ? Hype machine !

Edit: Nice article btw ! Cool stories. It's nice to feel nostalgic once in a while.

I remember Dave Georgeson being a bit like the Higby of PS1.

(I dont believe Higby is anything "like" Georgeson, just thought he played a similar role back then. And having said that, I think Higby is doing a much better job...by a mile.)
