Back over the xmas holiday I pieced together a little animation that showed a bit of the hex structure and gameplay for Planetside 2 using a Planetside 1 map.
At GDC some more detailed images of what the actually hex structure of INDAR would look like was released. So I began working on an updated version and this is what came out of that (see below) I'd like to continue to add more to this as time goes on. If you would like to have something added to the video in the future please let me know and I will try to get it in. It's been a big help for me to visualize how the gameplay may play out using this as a tool. Last edited by Miir; 2012-04-08 at 02:13 AM. |

I don't know how you would add it but I was watching some GDC video in which Higby was saying, as he flew over the terrain, something about how each of the little things he was flying over were minor capture points. Would be interesting if we could find a way to show just how many minor capture points there are in a hex.
Unless you already have that in? |

This was the image I used to recreate the map.
It's hard to judge what some of the smaller capture points would be. Anything that was sort of noticeable I flagged as a tower or bunker. But without more information it's hard to say for sure. Some of the areas look bigger than a tower so they could be something else. |

" In a region holding up to 600 players, you can just focus on the 10 that are in your squad."
To me that implies 600 people on your faction, which means 1,800 people fighting on the continent. Which kinda goes with what they've said previously. It was "thousands" then it became "over a thousand". But 1,800 on the server? What about the other 2 continents? If every server had a 1,800, or even 5,400 person cap (enough to fill every continent) you'd need to have 100s of servers just to support the population lol. For those who don't know Planetside started with 5

I gotta hand it to you Miir... that was first class... very organized, very clear, very well done.
On a personal note, you used a color for the Vanu that us colorblind people can distinguish easily from the NC on maps like this... thanks.

600 * 3 = 1800 1800 * 3 continents = 5400 per server (lets call it a cluster) total, approximately of course. Last edited by Shanesan; 2012-04-08 at 12:55 AM. |

Is there actually going to be a hard cap of 6000 per continent though? If so, that's going to cause people to not be able to log in unless they keep the per server character creation limited, and if they do that, it could cause average player load to be well under 6000 at times.
Perhaps 6000 is some kind of average, not maximum, that they are shooting for? One way they could have more players on a server yet with less chaos is through the multicrewing of vehicles, for example tanks, a driver and a gunner instead of the driver being both driver and gunner. But unfortunately it sounds like they are lowering the threshold and giving drivers the gun controls too. Which means it will be twice as many tanks in every situation - for example. |
