so with planetside2 looming and me saving cash to build a new system I kinda came at a cross roads recently first let me say that am an intel and nvidia fan-boy
But I have been doing a little bit of research and when comparing the the 8core AMD FX chip set to the I7 Intel processor Considering ill be having my own decided card or two, I am beginning to wonder if the AMD is the better choice seeing as all eight cores are unlocked for overclocking and Intel's i5-i7 processors only tiny bit of advantage lies in power saving by swtching off dedicated gpu for less strenuous tasks as in checking your email or browsing the web. and apparently AMD FX motherboards have some kinda special platform when you combine it with AMD Radeon cards called Scorpius or something that's suppose to make things faster With that being said I still have a geforce 460 I can use in the system for the physx if i get a duel or tri pcix motherboard The cost of the two configurations wants me to buy cheaper on what looks like a powerful 8 core chip but Ive never really was a fan of AMD or Radeon cards. So I wanna hear from you what is your options thoughts or just correct me if I said something out of place I can take constructive criticism pretty well. |

AMD CPUs especially FX ones are not a good choice atm. Make a thread in the tech forum answering my questions in the sticky and we will go from there.

Have you read any of the reviews out there concerning the FX series? Just curious, because 99% of the review sites out there could not recommend the FX series due to multiple issues it exhibits. Having lower IPC and having to be clocked far higher then the previous Phenom II to outperform it (causing it to be a power hog). The 8 core design in not a true 8 core, but more like a 4 core CPU with hyper threading (the six core FX has trouble keeping up with the six core Phenom II). The prices on the FX series are above where is should be. The 8150 is more expensive then the 2500K while being slower in most tasks, 8120 is around the 2500K price level so it makes to sense to get it. If these were priced sub $200 it would be better, but who knows when AMD will reduce the price level that much.
If you were even interested in going multi GPU check this review out. Shows how much of a bottleneck the FX processors are for high end rigs verse Sandy Bridge processors. For a broader review check this one out. There are some areas the FX series can out do Sandy, but there is not many unfortunately. Regarding using an AMD CPU + GPU combo to make them faster verse a Intel CPU + AMD GPU combo no such thing exists.

Thanks Goku, Guess ill stick to being an Intel Nvidia fan-boy
as per responce to your questions list 1. What is your budget and does that include shipping/taxes? 1000-1500 2. Where do you live? Kentucky 3. What do you need this computer to do (like gaming, Photoshop, and so on)? Gaming Old new, web browsing , lite video editing, lite photoshoping, UT3 Level design. 4. What parts will you need for the computer? Please list what parts specifically. All the parts 5. Are you reusing any parts for this computer? If so please say what parts. I wouldn't recommend it but i do have two hard drives that are about 6 years old there still working for the moment 1 255gig one 500 gig (the 500 has all my mp's and TV shows on it) The monitor am using now has a small nick in the screen so i can still use it DVI connection 6. What kind of monitor/resolution do you have or want to get to use for the computer? about the same as i have now its like 22's running at 1680 x 1050 7. Do you have a legit OS? If so what OS and is it 32-bit or 64-bit? I do have a copy of windows vista 32bit but its OEM 8. What are you looking for the motherboard to have feature wise? Like SLI, Crossfire, Firewire, USB 3.0, Sata 6.0 Gb/s, and so on. at least duel pcix 16, sata 6.0's SLI 9. Any plans to overclock the CPU or GPU? GPU 10. What time kind of time frame are you planning on ordering these parts? April 2012 Last edited by Bruttal; 2011-11-28 at 01:50 PM. |

About the computer build. Next gen GPUs and Ivy Bridge (successor to Sandy Bridge) will be out when you want to do this, so anything I come up with now won't be of much help. Come back around that time frame in April you want to ge the rig and we will figure something out for you.

The FX CPUs are bested for Intel when looking at at wide range of general purpose applications (SB cores give much better single threaded performance) but for well threaded programs (read modern games / some server workloads) the FX hold their own.
I have seen a number of reviews showing the FX-8150 beating the more expensive 2600K in BF3 for example. But like Goku ATM I would not recommend the FX for a general purpose home PC. |

I have seen reviews stating the same with BF3. That was maybe by 1 FPS at most. Judging from the HardOCP SLI review with the 8150 FX I bet there would be a bottleneck just like with those games in BF3.
I know there is some workstation areas like rendering BD can be good, but as you said most people do not make use of that here. I am hoping AMD can get either higher clocks or better IPC come Piledriver to allow them to become more competitive. Who knows if that will happen or not though.
