The lightning you shot at in the background was on fire and probably died due to collision damage, FF, or suicide but since you were the last enemy who shot at it the kill credit went to you.

You detonated some other explosive from someone else with one of your weapons and that did the final damage.

Doubt it. I've done this once; was sniping and I took a pot shot at a smoking tank out of sheer frustration; got the kill!

Ill have to try and test that theory.

I do know that I have lost and and I have stole kills though one person setting off anothers persons charge with grenades and rifles.

That's strange. Those weapons should not be able to damage the tank and therefore cannot get the killing blow xp afaik.
