Packet Loss + 5k pings!!!! WTF?? PLZ HELP!!

Ok, I have Bellsouth FastAccess ADSL with a fairly updated system. I have no problems with my connection in other programs except for PS. This issue has seemed to show up more often since the recent updates. It doesn't matter where I'm at -- I get the disconnection pop-up/packet loss B.S. usually within a few minutes into launching. It's really frustrating and have no idea how to fix it. Also, when I go to the server selection screen -- it displays that I have pings well over 5 thousand on ALL servers!!! I have ADSL!!! If anyone can help plz respond. Thanks in advance.

Try opening up the command console (go to Start Menu | Run and type in "cmd") then type in: tracert emerald.planetside.com

This will show the path that your connection goes through to get to the Emerald server (you can do different servers if you want). Paste the results here...

Also, are you running any sort of firewall?

Ugh, can you be a little more specific about how to type that in plz? Do you type in "cmd", press enter, then type in the other stuff? Or do you type it all in the run prompt?

I'm running XP Pro if that helps.

I wouldn't worry too much what the server screen says it's completely wrong with the pings. I get the same 5000 to 6000 pings but when i ping the server from a cmd window they're fine also gameplay is definantly not 5000+ pings

Ok, I'm an idiot -- but I managed to figure it out. Ok these are the results for the Markov server (the server I'm having trouble on).

Ok well obviously your ping is fine, don't worry about the in-game readout I guess...

So are you running a firewall or router or anything? Maybe some of the ports that the game uses are blocked or something... I'm not a network guru at all (always been on 56k), so somebody help us out here.

Ok about the firewall issue.

I'm running on a Westell Wirespeed Ethernet Modem.

I had it setup w/ a Linksys Wireless Router but dissabled it due to it's firewall -- now it's just the modem hooked up. BUT I believe my comp is still setup as if it was on a wireless network ( somehow it still works ). Hope that helps.

Something is seriously up with the pings. They're not at all correct. I'm getting 5k+ as well, but I'm not noticing any significant difference in play.

Just a bug it seems.

Same thing happened to me last night as well... but I couldn't even connect. So I guess it's not just you having problems right now.

Likewise here.

Some glitch obviosuly.

5800 pings...game plays fine, then after logout ping was 100-120.

Ok the problem was this:

My computer was setup on a wireless network - but it wasn't worth the effort of getting it to work.

So I disconnected the router and connect the DSL modem directly to the comp -- no router.

Unfortuantely my comp was still setup as if it were still on the wireless network.

This had to be the reason why I was having connection problems on PS. Why, you ask? Read on, my son.

To fix the problem I just uninstalled my modem/network adapters and reinstalled them -- which seemed to make the game run fine.

BUT -- there's always a but -- when I finally got everything together it was around 2 o'clock in the morning = not the busiest time on PS -- so this could still be a traffic issue. I'll have to report back l8er on this. Hope this helps -- prolly not though.
