Empirically speaking people who play MMO's do so either solo, with one other friend, or in a larger group setting during their play session. Planetside 2 so far offers avenues for all 3 categories. Ground combat has the Lightning (solo), ES MBT (2 player), and the Sunderer (squad based and acts as a force multiplier with groups of other ground vehicles.), but Planetside 2 is missing one of those elements for would be aviators. ES fighters provide solo play, Liberators small group, and the squad based Galaxy.
For those flying with their gaming buddy are left in the dark unless they wish to fly another fighter themselves. Not everyone is competent nor willing to be competent at flying, and flying separately puts a bit of a further disconnect to direct team play. I propose in the future development of Planetside 2 thought is given to possibly providing a side grade to all ES fighters to turn them into two seater craft requiring a pilot and gunner. Would provide a faster more agile and less personnel demanding airframe compared to fielding the Liberator. Some quick ideas on the matter: -All ES fighters main machine gun would gain the ability to swivel. -Missiles and rockets still require pilot to properly position nose so gunner can fire those, or leave them to pilot control, or allow both to fire rockets/missiles. -To provide balance and prevent this side grade from being end all be all for dogfights restrict machine gun swivel to 45 degrees horizontally and 90 degrees vertically. -Additionally perhaps slow down aircraft and add more armor but not nearly to the extent of the Liberator. -Extra gunner is considered additional resource (players are finite and thus the more manpower to run a vehicle the more resources it costs.) -Provides alternative from the solo fighter or 3 person big slow beefy gunship. Think of them as the Apache compared to the AC-130 (Liberator) |

Great Idea op. I would love to see 2 man Reavers where my co-pilot was in charge of the swivel gun up front and had the ability to fire off guided missiles. The benefits this would bring to the battlefield would be amazing.

Ditto. I was hoping with the customization that maybe the liberators would fill this role, but they look so big and slow. A PS1 reaver for the punch and surviveability it has should be a 2 man vehicle, and it would be awesome to be able to modify with different types of bombs and rockets.

You're basically just asking for a lighter gunship? I'm generally all for more stuff to blow up and variety. No specific reason why this wouldn't work. Would look maybe like the gunships from ME <3
As the guy above me mentions, a slight tweak to the Liberator would fill this niche you're asking for, basically. Just trading bomb capacity and the third person for a small increase in speed/maneuverability. Whole thing could be handled with certs, more or less. No great balance issues at work. Or by certing the one man fighters into 2man gunships, as someone else suggested (probably better). Last edited by vVRedOctoberVv; 2012-07-12 at 04:43 PM. |
