I think what a lot of people are doing is lamenting all of the old features that didn't make the cut while turning a blind eye to all the interesting new systems being put into place for PS2. As for shooting mechanics. Back in the day, I was switching between Planetside And Battlefield 1942 fairly regularly, and I remember quite clearly how frustratingly stiff and clunky Planetside felt compared to BF42 and other games of the era. I just can't take people seriously when they say that PS1's shooting was fine.

I approve the banning of annoying trolls. Good work hamma, keepin the psu forums awesome!

I dont really see the 'gunplay' as an issue at all, and like many have said, the stuff we saw from alpha is probably going to be improved by the time beta rolls around (which is like next week right? )

I was talking about this with a colleague of mine, and we have to agree that the gunplay was actually one of the worst aspects of PlanetSide 1. The rest of the game made the total package awesome, but the gunplay was okay at best, even for the time.

That said, Battlefield 3 and CoD: MW series are definitely the current de-facto standards when it comes to measure first person shooters. Like it or not, they are what people have come to expect in terms of gunplay. That does not mean that it should be an exact copy, but games that stray too far from these simply do not do as well and are generally seen as lacking.

The main reason shooting has evolved like this is because:

1. This style is easy to start with but difficult to master
2. It has all the ingredients of feedback to stimulate you, and allow you to keep learning.
3. It still allows for those adrenaline rushes that made early fast-paced shooters popular.

I personally really enjoy this style, and I think in general it is a good thing that more attention is given to the gunplay. In the end, doing it right, means more people will play it, even if they are less interested in the overarching massive aspect.

Worry less about making an AAA game and worry more about making a good game.
