Never buy top of the line, buy 2nd to best.

Radeon 9700?
No, get a Ti4600 instead.

You save a ton of money this way, but still keep 90% or your performance or more.

PS THIS GAME IS GONNA RULE
My computer (1.4GHz) is over 2 years old and it will easily run Planetside.

Over the past 2 years I have bought one video card (GeForce4 ti 4400) and one chip of ram.

I am hoping that I can get by for the next two years on this computer and only buy ram. I don't think that spending about $2000 on hardware every 3-4 years is that bad.

You dont need to spend alot of money on a comp to play comp games (including MMO games). I was still using my 450mhz, 256 sdram geforce2mx when i started the AC2 beta. The game was very playable on the right settings. A few weeks later we upgraded to 1ghz and a geforce2 gts and i could play that game seamlessly with over 1/2 the settings maxed (not the very high detail patch that came out, though)

You can buy a top of the line comp and keep it for 2 years, upgrading little things here and there before needing to give ti a full tune up/scrapping it.

The problem is people are still playing half life, which will run on anything.

Its due time that game companies start taking advantage of the hardware available

I just hope i'll be able to run PS when it first comes out, that way I won't have to wait until summer when I can get a job (i'm still in school) to upgrade my comps video card and RAM.
I have a geforce2MX and 256 mb of RAM, but my processor is good (1.7 GHz)
I hope to upgrade to ati raedeon 9700 (prices should drop after geforce FX comes out) and at least 512 MB of RAM.

Halflife in its hay day was a great game and people are still making mods for it even though it is very outdated by todays standards. I still find myself playing mods like CS, DoD, FA, and TFC every now and again. Hamma your right its high time companies like Valve, amoung others, gets it in gear and come out with something cutting edge like the rest of the stuff we've seen. Who's to say Valve isin't working in there little black box and developing something new. It's not very convincing given there past media spoofs with very little or no updates on hardly anything in like the past two years to at least let us think there're actually working on something. CSCZ is the only thing I've seen that's even close to something Valve has been working on. Hopefully Valve will bring something to the table in 2003 and get back out in the market again. It's been two going on three years people come on. Oh well, after Planetside comes out it wont matter any more. Lex you said it man, 2k or even less every 3 - 4 years isin't much to spend on a rig.

I kinda agree with the topic but just to be clear PS will most likely only require 256 (it was 512 but Smokey said they were working on lowering it) and the "really really good" VPU min is a GeForce2 so you don't need to have everything top of the line.

I say it all the time, but again, PS is going to kill your RAM. The one thing you should upgrade for a MMO is RAM, 1 gig is a very good number to have for a game like this. If there is too much info being processed at once, files are going to use virtual memory, which is very bad.

Theres a difference between what the box says is the minimun to play and what it actually is.... In the last few yeas the box minimun has been pretty ridicouls far off from whats needed to actually play the game....

Take unreal 2 min specs:
a geforce 2 MX
733 mhz cpu
256mb of ram.....

Somehow, i doubt you'll enjoy playing Unreal 2 whit those specs....

Don't read the min reqs, read the recommended reqs. Min reqs of today seem to be more or less bad jokes:
run, yes
run on a enjoyable level, no

So sad, so sad
