Some of the folks I met online years ago I still talk to... Even though we no longer play games together. People/outfits stick around for the same reason any other group of people hangs together... They like each other.

Note: TRG seems a good bunch of coconuts, for example.

No disrespect at all to the OP, but questions like these make me worry a bit about the community in PS2. I will stay optimistic as PS has always had a great community, but when did online gaming become more about being the best than connecting with other people that you enjoy playing games with. I played FFXI with a group online for about 2 years and it was one of the hardest things for me to say goodbye.

To answer the question as to why... Good online communities are like families, and most people will do what they have to do to keep those friendships.

I understand your concern, but i think i dont ever found a community that good, the longest i stayed with a community was a year and that was with cod 1. I hope that planetside will give me some nice buds to play with

But great stories here, shows another great part about online gaming

Back when developers rose their flag against dedicated servers, banishing players to 15 minute match-ups and then never seeing each other again.

Well, Sturmgrenadier started in the early days of WWIIOL beta and we've remained focused on playing games with persistent worlds in all of the time since then. I think that this is true of most of the old outfits. There's a lot of large gaming groups that have focused on games like EvE online, WWIIOL, WOT, etc, etc.

On a side note, we weren't a bunch of teenagers back then, and we still aren't. Funny how that happens.

I'd be worried if you weren't a bunch of teenagers back then, but now you are. Easy on the kombucha and mud baths, mate.

Wait a tic . . . screw that, hook me up.

Like everyone's said: community. You end up spending hours upon hours with the same people, and NOT like in other MMOs. It's hard to explain, but suffice to say PS is my fav PC game of al time PURELY because of those social interactions.

Maybe part of it is the scale. I don't care how pro you are. 1 man can not stand alone against the kinds of #s one sees in even PS1. You NEED teamwork, and not just a small insular group, but a larger, inevitably diverse, community - within outfits let alone the larger game.

I didnt really play ps1 but some in the reserve program back in the day, but I have a group ive been gaming with since 2007 who im bringing into the game with me, we joined a what i hope is a great old outfit. And im really looking forward to the spirit of community you guys are talking about. It may sound strange but im more excited about that aspect of the game than all the technical marvels and the feat of fitting 6000 people onto one server.

Im 37 years old have teenage kids so im way past that teenage age group you were mentioning OP. I remember playing games like utlima online, and my very first online shooter unreal 2 XMP. Not unreal tournament, it was a free multiplayer addon. Best game ever for its time in my book. Played it for years. Met some really great people during that then went through a dryspell with gaming and 2007 hits with the release of enemy territory quakewars, thats where i met my current group of gaming friends. Weve played numerous games through the years including COD, Battlefield, some mmorpgs, and its just really awesome having those friends to go into a game with. That feeling of teamwork and comeraderie is unmatched.

Im hoping PS2 brings back some of the old school teamwork aspects that team based multiplayer shooters used to be about. Like somebody said now adays it only seems to be about proving youre the best of the best. It was kindve like that a few years back but people genuinely cared about teamwork and comeraderie too. The thing is when everybody in the game has that kindve mentality the game community suffers and you get what Cod and BF's communities have devolved into today. A bunch of trash talking potty mouth angry internet tough guys who dont give a damn about teamwork or any of that stuff i mentioned above. Basically im trying to say I hope planetside keeps it oldschool somewhat and keeps it about teamwork and fun. I think the way the game is designed itll promote that, and all those lonewolfs will find themselves wanting if they try to play this game like that. For that im thankful.

As a grammar/spelling nazi, I'm kind of irritated by this post. Allow me to correct some things:

I ask this out of curiosity, with no implied malice of any kind -

Was that actually the most valuable thing you could contribute to this thread?

What exactly was I expected to say? The op didn't specify any specific question except "How many old outfits are sill around?" I didn't, nor am I going to, count how many outfits from 2003 are still active today.

Either I correct some grammar/spelling, or I don't post at all. Though you may not understand this, helping others improve their skills is more productive than ignoring them.

I really don't understand why people do this, I am doing my best to start a discussion here and to get a question answered that i'm interested in(while english is not my native language and i'm fairly young) think about it as that you had to learn a foreign language as a teenager.

And also, my DOTA 2 match was starting in 20 seconds so i had to type it really fast :P

But anyways, if you don't have anything usefull to contribute to this thread, please don't say anything at all.
If you do, i'm happy to hear your opinion on this.

PS. is this good enough for Mr. Grammar Nazi?

'Usefull' should only have one L. Oop, bad DeCastellac! *hits self with rolled up newspaper*

Anyways, I apologize, as I didn't realize English wasn't your natural tongue.

I did have to learn a foreign language as a teenager, and I understand it can be difficult. My bad.

I understand what you were trying to do, but it didn't come over as really nice.
For the sticked=stuck issue, I should have known that but it are those verbs that are pretty hard to do right when a language is not your native language. But then again, I'm adjusting myself to your language, i would like to see you speak mine, or at least i expect not someone to say he gets irritated by me while I'm trying to do my best.

Ok, no hard feelings

I can kinda understand that you guys get irritated by all those 'privates'. But i know alot more of planetside/planetside 2 than the average newcomer. I had played the original planetside for a few months also, but never got involved in an outfit/community since my english was not good enough back then, and I hadn't heard about this forum until recently.

But hey, without us planetside 2 would be empty right?
