There was a post that was removed that complained there was too much to read. I've updated the summary of people's opinions and went over all the posts again in detail to include and correct a few errors. It should now reflect in paraphrased form what everyone discussed in the previous pages. Most people fall into one of four groups (sampling error +/-2):
- No quick knife (21), said "No", but did not explain if they wanted equipped knife only or just didn't want a one-hit knife button
- Equipped knife only (37) Explicitly said they wanted equipped knife only. (PS1 style normally).
- No one-hit quick knife (47) Explicitly said they wanted a knife button as long as it didn't one-hit
- Other (16) Either didn't specify or went on a tangent about backstabs and other mechanisms related to knifing
Others have varying explanations and criteria they want for knifing. Some involve backstab rules and criteria and animations/delays and others involve class specific damage. A lot of ideas have focused on keeping "COD" type knifing out of PS2. (BF3 on the other hand was more respected by a lot of people).

I've revised my knife design. I'm not going to reiterate the decisions since that would make this pages of text. They were covered in the previous versions using people's input and concerns. Changed a few words to reflect people's opinions. (Remember damage percentages are just examples, 30% = 4 hits, 35% = 3 hits and would need to be balanced via gameplay testing depending on swipe speeds and other factors).
Before reading the following
look at this thread which clear up holstering concerns that were brought up previously. TL;DR it makes switching weapons more realistic and would help to explain why going from a MCG to a knife would be possible. (Possibly straining the nanites causing the reformation of the MCG after the swipe to be slow. Thus a post quick-button knife delay).
Version 4: Balanced Knife Design:- Quick-button knife with post use delay equal to the unholstering delay of pulling out the weapon again. (Missing with a quick knife leaves you at a huge disadvantage time wise essentially).
- Tapping the quick knife key swipes for 30% damage
- Holding the quick knife key transitions to throwing knife after 1 second. 10 m range medium COF. 30% damage
- Holding over 1.5 seconds has 25 m with small COF. 35% damage
- 3-mode equipped knife:
- swipe, 30% damage. It's faster for continuous swipes than quick knifing since it lacks the transition back to a weapon)
- stab, 35% damage, Audible noise like in PS1.
- throw, single use 30% damage (better for multiple knives since there's no holstering delay)
- Has pre (1 second to 1.5s when holding down the fire button) and post throw delay (longer animation).
- If you don't hold the fire button for 1 second the throw is cancelled.
- Throwing knifes has Slow spinning projectile. So if you get hit the person that threw it might be behind cover.
- When equipped secondary stab mode does 75% damage when backstabbing stationary targets.
- Maxes takes 0% damage from knife attacks.
- Damage is uniform across all classes with no class (other than max) having advantages or disadvantages.
- If two people knife at the same general time the attacks are parried doing no damage allowing friendlies to kill the attacker. Rare, but this was brought up and is really necessary to help those at low health to protect themselves from a finishing strike. This increases tactics and fulfills the concept of a quick time event for protecting oneself from knife attacks that a few people want.
Fun thought I'm indifferent about, but popped into my head while constructing this post. There's a science fiction idea that shields only stop fast moving objects. (In shows it allows people to pick up objects or hold things but block bullets). Could this be used in Planetside 2 to let a knife hit health and pass through shields? Might be overpowered, but would make health important even when a player had fully charged shields. (I won't go into depth, but suffice to say someone with 20% health and 100% shields could be quick knifed and killed).
Remember to keep an open mind and breathe. I'm going to go sleep.
