Not sure what game, some guys just made it up and it caught on, just like pwn, someone misspelled own and it just caught on.

"leet" speak started around the Quake 1 days. It exploded when CS came out.

Leet speak actually has its origins in the early internet days, pre AOL. the net was a moderated place then whit filters and all. People couldn't use the word porn for instance, they had to use pr0n. So in order for the hackers (real hackers) not to be traced when they were talking about hacking and illegal they had to replace various letters whit numbers.

Then the AOL came, moron floodgate opened, kids tought leet speak was cool and the rest isn't hard to imagen. Kids who wanted to be hackers started to speak it to be cool, those same idiots then moved onto games and voila, l33t dewds. Course, the leet speak has undergone some major changes and word additions.
