Creepy sales trend...

The most bizzare thing has happened to me two times now at two different web sites.

I was at Serverbeach.com, they offer low cost server hosting, and a few weeks ago I was at some other web site that was selling a service. And after about five minutes of being at the site a java window popped up with a sales person asking if I needed any help.

In both cases they were very nice and not super pushy... But still, I am not sure if I feel violated for knowing that I am actively being watched when I go to their sites, or if I should applaud them for having a good idea.

Has that happened to anyone else as of lately?

Yes, rackspace.com does that too. It's freakin' creepy the first time you see it.

Please tell me you don't seriously think that's a virus...

Use a pop up blocker with a nasty msg for them when they try to msg you. If you can.

For all you know it had a virus in it. Its a good target for someone to use as a place to infect people from.

I have the Google Toolbar with popup blocking enabled, and it has blocked 1,725 in the past ~4 months now... But this one was a java application, I saw the java teacup appear in the system tray, my system hickup, then it popped up.

Very creepy indeed...

I hope this kind of thing isn't cost effective. Imagine the amount of abuse these virtual salespeople go through to get a successful sale.

You have java installed? Remember with the whole Microsoft/Sun lawsuit that made WinXP SP1a and Win2k SP4 remove java and you have to install it from sun.

treat them like telemarketers, only over a computer. so basically, sent them vulgar and obsene comments until they leave. if they dont, send them links to the most hardcore porn you can find. now THATS something you cant do over a phone.
