HL2 by miles, least its models don't look like they were made in plastic and different shades of grey and bown.
Only thing impressive to me in D3 is the lighting and shadows, rest look like crap. Sides, anyone ever seen an open area in D3? Running in corridors went out with Quake 2 hehe. |

Half-Life 2 will probably be better, at least in some ways. From what I've seen, Doom 3 has the edge in cinematic effects by far, and in sound by a good bit. The games really reflect their creators' ideologies: id has always placed more emphasis on incredibly stunning (not immersive) graphics and ideas, while Vivendi and Valve place more of an emphasis on story and beauty, hence the lovely character modeling of Half-Life 2. Also, it appears that Half-Life 2 has a much better physics engine, which is really good for immersive gameplay.
