edit: it says only 57% of the game is downloaded, yet it doesn't update when I start it up. wtf.

I had that for a few mins. Just had to restart HL and it went back to normal.

This has happened to me before right click on Half Life 2 in your Games list and select properties, and just wait. It will start to automatically update if you want to make sure its updating when you do that right click on your steam icon in the system tray and hit monitor to show your network traffic. Hope that helps.

Oh I'm not suprised it sucks, first gen stuff always does, but that doesn't change the fact that even though I have a perfectly legal CD-key I still have to break out bittorrent to play it.
