Band discovery thread.

This thread is in essence a place to make other forum member who do not keep up with the new/old/underground music that comes out.

Here I go.

Matisyahu :

Known for their recent hit King without a crown this jewish reggae artist is bound to hit the top of the charts. Althought his songs can song a tad preachy, he has a very good style.

I seriously recommend it to anyone!

Avenged Sevenfold :

Recently they are pretty fucking hard to miss but they have been around for a while now. You can't get any more traditional rock band then this, dark clothes and alter-egos (stage names). They distinguish themselves from the mass with great lyrical content. Don't get me wrong ALOT of bands have good lyrics but they take it to epic proportions, they stretch the usual 2-3 minute track to 6 to 9 minute orgasms. The guitar is simply sublime and the drummer has ALOT of talent.

They started with Sounding The Seventh Trumpet back in 2001 where they absolutely dominated the underground hardcore scene. At that point the singing voice of M. Shadows wasn't quite developped yet so some songs who had great content came off has not so great. His screaming was fabulous!

They followed-up with Waking The Fallen in 2003 and again... the hardcore legion welcomed them with open arms. At this point Shadows' voice had improved greatly on both screaming and singing.

Sadly Shadows tore his larynx in a live show and underwent a procedure who left him unable to sing for a while but in late 2005 A7X came back in strength on a new label with City of Evil. Due to the incident, Shadows has been warned that if he kept up with what he used to do he would eventually lose his voice totally. The screaming has been largely reduced now making rare appearences in their new album. Shadows has also stated that he wanted to move away from the hardcore style who's now populated with posers and wannabe's, saying it was saturated. The record itself is joygasmic! Including the same 6 to 9 minute song template that was in it's predessecors.

I'm kind of tired so I might of missed some details but I'm pretty sure I got all of it. They are my favorite band ever since I've discovered them in 2001 thanks to a friend. All three albums are a must buy in my opinion.

Short review.

Propagandhi :

A punk/trash band from California Propagandhi is best known for promoting left-wing causes and standing up against human rights violations, the band's political attitude includes anti-racism, anti-homophobism, anti-imperialism, anti-fascism, and anti-capitalism. Moral and ethical attitudes include pacifism and veganism.

They have eight albums total

They have a very informative point of views and they are part of the G7 welcoming committee (who was basicly founded by two of their main members) a socially aware label who promote the same things as the leading band of the label.

Due to their views they have yet to become mainstream, people prefer catchy lyrics then meaningfull lyrics with a political opinion.

They also post their opinion on various events around the globe with an informative point of view wich isn't resumed to "OMG BUSH SUCKS!". They choose to go the mature way and express they're opinion in an intelligent way.

They also donate ALOT of money to various charities keeping enough to live and to pay for their website, distrubution etc. unlike some bands who say they are socially active and donate maybe 1 million out of their 100 million dollar empire.

They are also banned from numerous cities thanks to their political views. Like alot of their signed bands in fact. (Namely Swallowing shit who's banned from winnipeg)

I like Dragon Fli Empire from Calgary. Im not going to go into a whole long in depth thing, but, I will say they are more of a laid back rap group, not the kind that goes arround talking about being straight up, and singing about other ******

Mad Season
Layne Staley - Vocals
Mike McCready - Guitar
Martin Barrett - Drums
"Baker" - Bass
Well, as you have probably noticed I adore 90's rock, grunge in particular. Mad season is amazing. Mike Mcready from Pearl Jam does the guitar in a bluesy way that doesn't often appear in Pearl Jam's songs, and the jams are just spectacular. "Baker" is a relatively talented bassist, as is Barret with drums. Layne staley, fucking amazing, I don't give a fuck what you say, Layne had the best voice of any being to roam the earth. Alice in Chains is amazing, but this is perfect.

Although they only put out one album, ABOVE, its a masterpiece. The skill that the band alone, without layne, is abundant in the jam track November Hotel. And Layne is well, Layne, hes amazing.

Blur
Gorillaz essentially, but the guitar is far superior. And it lacks the rap factor, which in my eyes is a very good thing.



Though these bands aren't new in any sense, they are fantastic and aren't given enough credit.

It's a New Orleans funk band. I found out about them by watching a Warren Miller movie. Bought one album Ruckus, I listen to at least 4 or 5 songs every day...probably not a good thing.

The Arcade Fire :

Again, a Montr�al Indie Rock band that was underground for a while and then made a sudden WTF appearence on the charts. They've been around for a while (since 2003). They combine alot of instruments that aren't commonly seen on the whole mainstream music scene, including piano, violin, viola, cello, xylophone, keyboard, French horn, accordion, and harp. They have a unique sound, something that's been lacking recently...

It's odd music (not the oddest I've heard) to say the least, but it's worth listening to. Again, it might not fit into your style of music but it's still worth a try. They're album called Funeral is an interesting piece.

Had a list of bands I wanted to write about, but it seems this is mostly dedicated to underground stuff.

Caroline's Spine- They aren't really around anymore, but they had some really sweet songs back in the late 90's. "Sullivan" is definitely one of my favorite songs ever. They've got a solid, heavy sound, with resounding vocals from Jimmy Newquist. Nice music to just jam or chill to, and it's actually about something.

Gogol Bordello :

Gogol Bordello is a ***** punk band from New York City, although many of the members are immigrants from Eastern Europe. Much of their sound is inspired by ***** music, and the band incorporates minor-key accordion and fiddle mixed with cabaret and punk energy, dub, electric guitar and drums. In New York City they're known for their frenetic, hungry stage shows in the Lower East Side, they have also toured in Europe since 2000.

Gogol Bordello is led by their charismatic singer, Ukrainian immigrant Eugene H�tz (DJ H�tz), who plays the role of a translator in the movie version of Everything is Illuminated.

The band formed in 1996, when H�tz moved to New York City. Their first single was released in 1999, and several full-length albums have followed since then, as well as a European tour. According to the New York Times, "Gogol Bordello has become an underground phenomenon in New York with its brand of contrarian globalism. Their sound is raucous, sweaty, tuneful and recklessly vibrant, like the punk and ***** music that inspired them. Iggy Pop meets Kafka. A weird blend of the Dead Kennedys, Flogging Molly, and the Decemberists (only the instrumental sound can be related to the Decemberists.)"

Their song "My Strange Uncles From Abroad" is representative of their folksy Eastern European sound.

The band also had a song, "Occurrence on the Border", on the 4th Punk Rock Strike compilation.

Some of the band members also take part in a side project entitled J.U.F. (Jewish-Ukranian Freundschaft), whose sound is similar to that of Gogol Bordello.

Yeah... well... I was too lazy to write my own so I took wiki's. They're a good underground band honestly, I love their unique sound. Now.... back to bed I go... urrrr

They are essentially another European power metal band, but they have a very symphonic quality about them. The tracks I listened to sounded fresh and were very high quality. They also closely resemble Dragonforce, which is a plus. I'll probably pick up the CD when CD baby gets it back in.
