Update (From original post): I have spoken with some of my sources at SOE and they have indicated that this is "PlanetSide Anniversary Related" which makes sense considering PlanetSide was released May 20th, 2003. What that means I am unsure however this may indicate it's related to the original game.

It seems odd to start a comic strip unless there's something significant happening. If it were just the timer, then I'd assume it was just a merit or something.
