Levels/BR in PS2

Okay, i have read like every article, every document, im still confused on what role levels and as a result certs play in PS2.

I get the offline leveling with the skill tress and shit. what I don't get is how the certs tie in with that. this recent PC gamer article confused me even more.

PlanetSide 2’s top end will be able to scoot into battle on a quadbike, hop off to climb into a tank, eviscerate enemy defences from behind and jet out in a fighter gunship.
I was under the assumption that i had to unlock things via certs, then i could put offline points into those things. but that post and others like we will have all 6 classes available to us right away and stuff(which i can find the quote for) confuses me.

I understand overtime a player could potentially offline level points into everything, however i thought that that character would still be limited by certs on exactly how many things he can do at once? or perhaps that not an issue anymore since they're limiting what people can do via classes and locking classes into certain weapons. seems kinda mainstream.

I think you need to look at cert points being more like accumulative bep you earn over time, rather than 4 points to buy HA as it is now.
The skill trees represent how you spend those points.
You have access to all the classes (although I'm pretty sure higby mentioned likes of liberator and maxes needing to be unlocked) so you have basic means to heal yourselves and others as a medic , or shoot a cycler as light armour.
BR determines how far down a certain class line you can go , before you need to level up unlock next tier.
Each tier may have 3 or 4 variations within each class on what you spend cert points online or offline.
You could highlight all 4 to work on, or just pick one ,or skip that tier to put points in next tier. Provided you level up. And provided you don't need to have a telescope on your sniper rifle to be able to use a silencer at the higher tier.
You could just highlight everything for every class and be a jack of all trades , and work a tier at a time .
Or, you could put everything into air cavalry ,level up and be best at air as a specialist, then work on any others after which take your fancy.

Also , you log in as a light class .Then , from your class menu, you decide whether to carry cycler A ,B,C or D which you have unlocked via cert points. Do I wear the green camo type or the white snow suit sort of thing.
You then go back to terminal , choose medic. You changed class . Now decide whether you want to take med app A,B,C or D, and so on.

Okay, just because its you, i write it down:

BEP: As you play, kill stuff and do whatever, you gain BEP. Enough BEP = next BR. usual stuff.
Now, bound to your BR are the skills you can learn for your classes and vehicles. While we dont yet know if a skill has multiple levels, of just one, its pretty save to say that a BR1 cant technically train the "Asteroid Launcher" for his Scyte, because that skill requires at least BR 16, for example. On top of that, you propably also need the skill "advanced weapons of PWN", a BR10 skill, trained to train the "Asteroid Launcher". In other words, that means the skills are pretty much like certs, just that instead of using points to unlock them, you use time.

Skills are tied to your class. In your Heavy Assault Class, you may have a "Lasher" skill that you wont have in any other class, means you can only use the Lasher in your Heavy Assault class. On Top of that, you could choose to not use the Lasher, but a different HA weapon in that class. Thats what i could gather from recent information at least. How customizable your loadouts are in each class is yet unknown, but it sounds like we get quite the options.

Now, what was written in that PC Gamer article you quoted is actually pretty simple: At the very end, when you got max BR and all thosen skills trained, you can just do whatever you want at any time. Get on your fury, switch to gunning a Tank, get cloaking and sneak into the enemys base to annoy the crap outta them, and fly away with a plane. That is pretty much what the quote says.

Got it?

So as I have said multiple times, same as BR40. You can do everything, just not all at the same time.

Except more restrictive than BR40 since you can't be a Rexo + engi + medic + HA + AV + hacker all at the same time.

So like BR40 only more balanced. Also, hopefully the entire game mechanics are being carefully balanced with everyone potentially having access to everything in mind, unlike Planetside 1 which was balanced with BR20 being the max and CR5's being uncommon.

I asked Higby for some clarification on BR/certs/skills/specialisation but he said they were saving a thorough explanation for a whole weeks theme (like TR week).

The way I see it is:

You earn experience (via both time and game play) and gain BR, along with certification aka specialisation points.

These go into accessing new equipment or variants in the 6 infantry classes or specific vehicle specialisation trees.

Has it been confirmed that the heavy assualt class can't carry a form of AV? Also as far as I know we've seen nothing on who can use hacking.

Assuming I can carry some form of AV for Maxes I will have Rexo + regening shields (engy) + Higby said everyone will have some way to self heal (PS1 I used medpacks and Regen implant instead of Medic) + AV + possably Hacking and be the same as I was in PS1. However this time they said there is no restrictions on armor type to drive/pilot vehicles, so now I can hotdrop on top of your tower with all that too

Heavy assault class can carry AV , SA or HA weapons but not at the same time. Yet to be confirmed if you can carry AV/SA/HA plus a normal rifle like a gauss.

Your mixing stuff up.

AV is part of the Heavy Assault class, but unknown yet if you can use a MCG and something Decimator like at the same time. And the "no restriction on driving" is just currently the chase, they said they may change that.

Ever play Diablo 2? Kinda like that skill tree from what I understand, except rather than getting skill points as you level, you get them from offline training. But, like diablo, you have to wait until a certain level in order to unlock skills/etc.

Soo, a half assed example...

So the 'X hours training' is how long it takes to unlock that cert, but you can't even start training Expert Hacking until you have both basic and advanced hacking trained, and are BR12.

Higgs said the BR won't be a major obstacle. Presumably its primary purpose is to prevent people from just making 20 alts and logging in once a day to get a bunch of max level characters without ever having to play.

What am I mixing up? You said the same thing I did. At the moment we don't know if you can have a form of AV with HA at the same time (maybe a rocklet, doesn't have to be a deci), and currently you can use Rexo as a pilot. I was not stating fact, just pointing out what might still be possible.
