In PS1, each grid square on a cont map measures 400m x 400m, so each 20x20 cont map measures 8km x 8km from edge to edge - which is the same size as we've been told the PS2 maps will be. So at first glance PS1 and PS2 conts sound like they might be about the same size. HOWEVER, one big factor that is still unknown is whether they got the perceived scale right this time. In PS1, 1 meter looked to the eye to be about half the length of an actual meter perceptually-speaking. So the question becomes, "how long is 1m perceived to be in PS2?" If meters "look" to be closer in scale to actual meters within the PS2 gameworld, then PS2 maps could in fact be much larger than they are in PS1. |

That's too bad. Star Wars Galaxies had ten 16Km square planets when it launched (in 2003). At the end of the game you could fly from one corner to the other in about 9 minutes (22.5 Km at modest 150KPH). On a PS2 map, a pilot will only be able to fly in a straight line for about 3 minutes at 150KPH, if they started flying near the edge of the map.
Unfortunately, it looks pilots will feel the size of the box in PS2. However, what would negate that feeling entirely is if the maps wrapped around continuously. Nothing sucks the fun out flying more than running into the edge of the world... |

The continent will be 8x8 km, that' 64 square kilometer. Like duke said, complety cities may be smaller than that. Each continent is larger than Skyrim.
Erednil is right about the scale too. It also matters how you see it and how fast you can travel. If you feel like boxed in an aircraft, you should try Flight Simulator #whatever... those may offer intercontinental flights, that would be long enough. PS2 offers still way more than flying your chopper in a BF3 map. And about the music during the interview. Was that Don Ferrone's remastered Hades Long Tunnel? |
