Also from the business point of view. It's easier to make a good shooter and have it run on those rented 64 player dedicated servers than trying to host (which costs the company a lot of money) a server that will actually handle thousands of people.
If PS2 will be a success, prepare for Battlefield 4: Online Warfare!

All the genre really needs is for a good game to come out and plant the seed in people's mind that 8 vs 8 doesn't cut it anymore. Man I can just imagine COD announcing an MMO....The hype will be crazy among causal gamers and hardcore gamers alike. |

I couldn't play other FPSs after I first played Planetside. The idea of 16vs16 just seemed too small and insignificant.
Planetside's biggest problem to be honest is the lack of a comprehensive free trial. PS2 being f2p with a cash shop will open the doors to every single willing PC gamer on the planet where time will be the only initial investment. Hopefully PS2 will bust the market open for more to come. |

I'd say there aren't more MMOFPS titles because most companies would rather follow the CoD route. Notice how most of the recent FPS's have been similar to CoD/Battlefield. Kind of like the MMO's, they're all similar to WoW.
