I will likely be playing as a guy, but it might be interesting to play one character as a female, just to see if there's any difference.
Reasons I can see, or have seen, include: 1) Uniqueness - if most players (who are guys, in FPS type games) play as guys, so being a girl model makes you easy to recognize. Also, you get to use player models that aren't as over used. 2) Psychological - it is true that in MMORPGs like EQ, female characters tend to get more offers of help, aid, and such just by appearing to be female. That could help here, to attract folks to your squad, get first aid, etc. But, it might have some detractions, such as patronizing behavior, leadership problems, etc. 3) It's a game - why not play as a girl, just for the heck of it? I mean, we already are well into make-belive from the get-go 4) Eye-candy. I've heard plenty of guys report that they like using the female player models, because they have to look at 'em all the time - might as well be what they would prefer to look at. 5) Role playing challenge - in the terms of, can you convince the other players that you are a girl playing as a girl, when you really are a guy? For some, it's just an extra challenge to the game. Personally, I'd expect to run into all of the above - as well as those who play females because they are women, and girls who play guy models for some reasons similar to the above. |

i'm about 1/1 on my ratio of male to female characters played. for me it's pretty simple.
in a lot of games the female characters just look better. considering i'll be seeing my avatar over the course of potentially several years just like i did in eq i want what i consider to be a cool model. if that happens to be a female model then that's what i'll play. nothing to do with roleplaying or psychological stuff, i'm just totally vain. also, my common names are mostly female. Eris and Kallisti were the greek and roman goddesses of chaos and i normally use those for FPS and Discordja for my accounts and board titles. course, in ps i'll probably be male because terran goggles are hella cool and for the return of the late great medal of honor superstar Swank El'Penos! |

Women get more stuff. If you don't believe me, get any other MMORPG and make a female character, especially a busty one (like a wood elf in EQ). I guarantee that if you make any kind of flirtatious remark about being a chick and needing gear, you'll get deluged with presents. I remember way back when I didn't know EQ wasn't a boring pile of garbage, me and a friend used to make level 1 female characters and just run around begging for gear until we had full inventories. It usually didn't take long...
Putting female characters in games is a friggin' minefield, especially for a FPS. If you don't put them in, you're sexist because they're not there. If you DO put them in, you're sexist because your game contains scenes of women getting attacked. I hate feminists. Women have equal rights under the Constitution, social control over the only thing men want, they don't have to serve in the military if there's a draft and they STILL complain.

Quite simpley, as stated many times before, female players get more stuff given to them.
I read it in a computer gaming magazine, and a female friend of mine told me when she played Diablo2, ppl would always give her money and weapons. So I can guarentee chick players will get all the ammo and med packs they want. |

So what if girls get more in games, that's just the instinct of guys trying to get a piece unconsciously. The fact is, that women make less than men do at the same jobs, they have to work harder to get those jobs, and they aren't given the respect that they deseerve for doing those jobs. Men and women are not equal, that is easy to see.
Look at politics, what is the male:female ratio in the house and the senate? They are about 6:1. That doesn't seem even to me. I am a man, but I think that many people underestimate how much women are disadvantaged. Definitely not in games, but in real life.
