I think that means the NC controls a base. That's a guess, but you can see a red one in http://www.worthplaying.com/press/88/planetside_1.jpg and I'd be willing to bet that there might be a purple one somewhere if the Vanu could capture a base for a screenshot.

Nah, the colors don't match the walls in the shots. I am pretty sure they are waypoints. Look at this thread here for discussion on the beams of light.

hm maybe but maybes its this. It's true that it takes some time for the colors on a base to change over after being captured... am i right. well maybe in this time a beam is shot up to tell others there is a base that has been taken over recently. Or the beam is always there but the bases colors have not changed over yet ....
