But back on point, from a lore point of view to me...

The NC are nothing more than oppertunistic Terrorists who justifiy murder of innocents for the delusion of freedom where in reality they wish to supplant the current ruling governement with their own. (aka power grab)

The VS are a fanatical religious cult, praying to their alien Vanu demi-gods and taking holy war to the rest of humanity with the intent of converting us all to Vanu-ism.

The TR were the institution of Peace, Prosperity and order until pushed into a more hardline authortarian regime by the terrorist actions of the NC. Now the TR strives to reassert its control over the 2 splinter factions in an effort to restore order & justice.

If you believe the holovid, it was one man making a power play - the entire TR is not corrupt.

Or you can also believe that the holovid was a fake, perhaps planted evidence to further sow insurrection.

I think they wrote it such that it can be taken either way. Like the 9/11 conspiracy theorists. Big government conspiracy to justify extreme measures? Or simply a terrorist act. The whole story feels like they combined Battlestar Galactica with 9/11, though BSG also had a terrorist faction in among their fleet that destroyed an entire ship. Intentionally gray so NC can point to one interpretation and TR can point to another. And VS can point the whole ordeal showing how simple minded and savage the other two factions are.

I have been VS for 2/3rd of my PS1 career, NC for the last third. I've kept probably more bounds on NC side, though, are they are the latest I played with. On VS at the end, it's was pretty much only Unimatrix (BobbyShaftoe and the rest) who I was playing with, if not simply solowhoring.

It's probably the people I used to play with who will dictate where I end up. If it's going to be put on vote, then I'll let the empire main guns tell me which empire I prefer

Haha the bias in this thread is strong, let me share an outsiders perspective.

TR: A tyrannical government hell bent on maintaining power and dominance, uses communist-style propaganda and covers up the truth more often than not. Anyone/thing that has power for so long eventually gets corrupt, it's just a matter of history. They probably have quite a lot of decent hardworking members, but unfortunately their government has seized far too much power for it to ever be the peace loving for-the-people entity that it once was.

NC: The inevitable rebels of the TR regime. If you cover up the truth and become a tyrannical entity, you will eventually be met with resistance. They are probably just as bad as the TR when it comes to morales, they just have clashing ideologies. Their view on the Vanu seems fairly far fetched, considering they use alien technologies themselves when it suits them, and the fact that they would declare war over something so small speaks volumes to how TR-like they can be.

Vanu Sovereignty: Not the innocent third party in this trio of madness at all. They have all but thrown all ethics out the window when it comes to their science and believe they can 'play god' if you will. Technology and Science is great, but huge sweeping discoveries should be treated with caution, rather than instant implementation. They seem to have a superiority complex, and believe they are some kind of 'Übermensch', due to their technological superiority.

My rating for the most sane/ethical/do-good/politically-correct is probably the following: NC > Vanu > TR

I'm in a similar situation. I'm attracted by the TR side: look, fast weapons, high-speed aircraft, etc (but the Scythe superiority is also tempting).

But on the other side the TR are looking like a "bad" choice due to their numerical superiority, I would hate to be in a dominant faction. The facebook app shows a LOT of TRs. Is there a possibility that TR will be over-represented on some servers ? Well, I think I had to wait and see.
