DXTory Guide

DXTory Guide

For those who want to use DXTory rather than FRAPS for their recordings, this is a guide to the settings I currently use:
  1. Download DXTory from http://www.dxtory.com/v2-download-en.html
  2. Download the x264 VFW Codec from http://www.digital-digest.com/softwa...VFW_Codec.html make sure to download and install the x86 and x64 versions!
  3. Open DXTory. You can disregard the first tab. Under the second tab (Overlay Setting) I leave everything as default apart from the Recording Status - I have changed this to red.
  4. 3rd tab (Folder Setting). Click on the button with the green + icon and add a folder, this will be where all your recordings are saved. If you have more than 1 drive then you can add them here and DXTory will write to them all like a RAID array.
You can also set a folder for your screenshots.
  5. 4th Tab (Hotkey Setting). You can set these to whatever you like.
  6. 5th Tab (Movie Setting)I use the x264vfw codec. It combines good quality with low file size and a relatively low fps-hit.

Make sure the frame rate is set to 30, and the size set to whatever your desktop resolution is, in my case 1920x1080. And, select file format: AVI and select file output.
  7. Click the pen button next to the codec to adjust the codec settings:
Copy these settings and then open the Analysis & Encoding tab

    Again, copy these settings

I tested recording a 14 second video with this codec and the DXTory Codec the filesize difference was quite massive:
    x264VFW: 96.5mb
    DXTory: 1.16 GB
The video quality doesn’t differ that much at all.
  8. 6th tab (Audio Setting)DXTory has the ability to record multiple audio streams. To add a stream just click on the green + and set up your new stream.
I tend to have my mic set as a secondary input stream. I have Use a Push-to-Talk Hotkey enabled so it only records the mic when I hit my ptt key for mumble.
  9. 7th Tab (Screenshot Setting) I leave this as default
  10. 8th Tab (Advanced Setting) the only thing I change in here is to set Processing Threads to the same amount of cores as my CPU. Since I have an i5 3570k I set it to 4, if you have an i7 you could set this to 8 (or 12 if you have an older SB hex-core)
  11. For those of you that would like this offline, I've attached a PDF version to this thread.

Re: DXTory Guide

Very nice. I had been using UT as my codec and was sad that my CPU couldn't handle 1080p (same CPU as yours.) Now, the difference between UT at 720p and this one at 1080p is only 2fps that I can tell, and it's much smaller.
