Swearing is a maturity check.

If you swear, then you are still a child with zero self control.

If a cinderblock falls from a 20 story building and lands on my foot, I yell "FUCK" very loudly.

But yeah, I don't spam it like most people do in video games.

I would say "thank God" when it didnt land on my head and kill me....right after I screamed out "fuck me".

Still though....there isnt a single thing that happens in a virtual world that would suprise those words out of my mouth, much less make me take the time to type them out.

The game isn't real.

You raging at someone, calling them a fucking asshole and telling them to go and fuck their mother, is real.

You are directly insulting another person. You are not actually causing pain and suffering to pixels.

Now, having said that - i'm the first person to do this sort of thing. However, i can understand why its frowned upon.

It isn't just black and white.

Saying "Oh shit, there's a thousand tanks over there!" isn't being immature.

Saying "You fucking ball sucking ***!" because you got killed is highly immature.

shades of grey...

Dude i am all for letting MATURE ADULTS swear on WAR games. This isn't a Disney game for 10 year olds to get on. So here are a few things I want to get out to a few people.

-To Parents-
1) Don't let your kids play M rated games if you don't want them to think swearing is cool, or even gaining a habit of swearing.
2) If you looked at one and thought I am ignorant, then your an idiot.

-To Smart Parents-
1) If YOU personally can't handle people swearing at you, or just simply to other people that you see in the chat box. /ignore (playername). Also, make the chat box so that only SQUAD or FRIENDS will show in it.

-To Gamers-
1) Yes swearing is part of the feeling towards the game, but there is seriously a limit. I don't need a freaking chat box full of profanity. If your goal in life is to annoy people then put your ass to the window while people walk by.
2) If you think that 1 contradicts what I said to the "Smart Parents" then you need to learn how to read outside the box. This is for when I want to know what is locally going on. Or in command chat. So Chill.

There are more as you should all know. Because you are thinking the same things. But these are my main points.

Very much agree with the OP.

An MMORPG and a FPS environment are very different, and they should be treated as such.

There should less of a tolerance and a harsher rule set for RPG games because it's a more laid back and calmer atmosphere.

FPS censoring should much more lenient, as you said, we're literally trying to murder each other day in and day out so a little venting is harmless. There of course should be a line that needs to be drawn. But it's fairly obvious to tell when someone is just venting and going overboard.

I've gotten silenced for 3 days for saying "If you kill the gen then I'll kill you". If a GM literally interrupted that as a death threat then SOE needs to loosen up a bit.

I recall another CR5 getting permanently silenced for saying something along the lines of "You blow the gen I blow you". It was construed as "sexual harassment". Get a grip.

Anyways, +1 for less censorship.

You've never played Dead Space or Amnesia, have you?

Dead Space isn't even relatively scary. You know what's going to happen, where it's going to happen, and when it's going to happen. It's waaay too predictable.

Amnesia, on the other hand...

I still wake up in a cold sweat. That game properly raped my mind.

I'm 6'2, i go boxing three times a week - and yet if i'm thirsty in the middle of the night, i will now NEVER go down those fucking stairs because i KNOW there will be some mutant, veiny, bloody, gaping monster down there ready to eat my face. The dark now fucking terrifies me.

Fuck that game, fuck my life.

I'm not a big fan of "zero" moderation, but I do think the current level of SOE Forum moderation is ridiculous. I'm talking about the profanity filter itself. It's been expanded to a crazy level that blocks some pretty innocuous words. As for in-game, just put a filter in, have it turned on by default, and then display a warning to the player when they turn it off. If they turn it off it should be off forever unless the player turns it on again.

A thirteen-year-old is already well acquainted with profanity.

The reason for profanity in a game is the same as the reason for profanity in any situation: it helps the person better express himself. If these words were unneeded, they never would have appeared in the first place or they would have fallen into disuse. It is you that chooses to consider them inappropriate.

I've only ever visited the something awful forums once, to read a story about a bin-man, but I remember liking the way they implemented their profanity filter at the time.

With that in mind, I think the game should probably start with the profanity filter enabled and have a drop-down menu in the options that allows you to either choose the S/A-style option ("that's when the poo poo hit the fan and I thought "sweetly caress this!"") or to disable the filter entirely ("that's when the shit hit the fan and I thought, "fuck this!"").

As far as profanity itself, it's an art-form like any other use of language. If you just shit fuck cunt all over the piss flaps fuck forums, you're probably using it incorrectly, just as if you'd written the where then was why what they how got when like. The key is using it at the right times in the right way to give sentences that little extra kick when they deserve it.

This is one of the few times I agree with South Park's take on this issue:

Saying a curse word too much makes it lose any value and makes it just another unpleasant noise like nails on a chalkboard.
