I had to live in an appartment that was basically a bathroom and a bedroom and use public transportation (but I do both those things now anyway, so what's the big deal?

). Also, that was 23,000 USD AFTER taxes. I don't remember, but I think I had a very small food budget too and I definitely wasn't saving anything for retirement. But the fact of the matter is, I *CAN* live happily on it...just not after I turn 65.

ah, $23,000 *after* taxes is different. you probably have to make at least $36,000 before to make $24,000 after taxes.
