Re: Supression Effect

I honestly don't think it fits Planetside. I mean we don't have prone or leaning but were considering suppression? Why? How does that make sense? If you want a realism shooter with stuff like that, and natural wobble when i'm aiming down my sights then better give me my realistic ability to lay down or peek around corners.

I mean as a future soldier who cannot truly die, and has an energy shield that can take some punishment before your even hurt would you be as scared of bullets? I could see taking some accuracy penalty when your actually being hit by bullets though. Unless your a MAX.

The suppressive affect in planetside 2 is: You move out of cover under fire and you die.

This adds a lot to something BF3 does very well, which is helps you recognize when you're under threat. This allows them to have extremely powerful weapons which do a lot of damage quickly, but it doesn't feel OVERLY punishing because you usually know between bullet whiz by, screen blur, screen shake, etc that you're under attack without you having to take damage to find out. Thats something we need to work on for Planetside 2 also. Now, for us that should be an edge bluring effect that doesn't obscure your main sight line, because you're going to be under a lot more fire most of the time. We don't want "suppression" to be something that actually hurts your accuracy and is tracked by the other team as a way to get points, it'd just get to spammy. But, it is a critical part of weapon power, threat detection, etc
Yeah, I think I like the logic behind this. Basically, its projecting situational awareness to the player imersively, without undue frustration.

I think edge screen blur would be fine. Even if it was just a color. Like how when you take damage you see red from the direction, make it yellow to be like "you're not getting damaged but you are being shot at."

Though shouldn't you like, notice bullets and stuff wizzing by, considering we have colored tracers?

Seems superflous.

I liked the system in MAG. basically you got a white bar if there was shooting near you, a yellow bar if someone was shooting at you and a red one if you were being hit.

A good system IMO, only thing I like in MAG!

Sounds have usually been sufficient for me to know when I'm being shot at.
I have been aided by visuals, as in seeing them shoot, seeing bullets, or see the impact/effect of an impact.

Hiding behind cover that is taking fire, I don't need my screen, HUD, or anything to shake really. I especially don't want it to happen as I'm trying to kill a guy. Some games make suppression so intense the dual is decided on who can get the first shot, and keep the spray going.

I like the idea of a slight blur in the direction the fire is coming, like the red for the hit dmg taken indicator

Sorta unrelated, but did you guys notice the blue static thingimabob in the upper edge of the screen when Higgles was taking damage often for the first time of the spawn? I suppose that was the indicator that they were absorbed by shield?

i dont see a problem with a small blur around the edges. there definitely does not need to be a cumulative effect. unless there is something like a major explosion around you.

Yeah but Players are oblivious these days. I remember sitting behind a tree in '04 with bullets smashing into it going "oh god oh god a bunch of people are shooting at me." and legitimately feeling suppressed, especially if a Magrider was shooting at my location as well.

Massive battles are not going to be enhanced by what will be near constant flickering around the edges. If you must have this, at least make it toggle-able.

Since the plan is for it to have no effect on gameplay just let players toggle it on or off.

In the futuristic environment with everybody running around with combat armor on and probably pumped full of stims, I don't think a solider will be to effected by getting shot at.

It makes sense in modern war games and whatnot because you're very exposed to enemy fire.

Also, the gameplay in Planetside 2 is to fast paced for that to ever have an real effect.

Fuck, no way you are pumping me up with stims! I'm an absolutist!

Besides, we're NC, we can't afford any.

Maybe that is why the NC is going to get their asses kicked 24/7.
