Based on TRay having tweeted that the warpgates in PS2 are twice as large as in PS1, I calculated the square kilometers of Indar to be around twice as large as Cyssor (ignoring PS1's horribly broken and inaccurate measuring system, which is useless for this kind of comparison).

That's twice as much area within the map borders, but you also have to take into account that Cyssor in particular was both one of the largest PS1 maps, as well as the fact that it had a lot of waterways and that big mountain that were basically unused play areas for the most part.

So we've got five times as many players shoved into two times as much map area (probably more like 4x as much actual contestable land, given how much of PS1's terrain was never fought over very often).

I'm not worried about the populations being overly spread out for two reasons though. For one, it's F2P and will be easier to jump into for new and returning players, so populations probably won't be a problem for years to come. For another, players tend to go where there's fighting, so as long as there are several squads from two or three empires on a continent, I think the fighting will work itself out.

Work's too busy to type, gotta make a list!

1) Does anyone remember the highest numbers we hit in PS1 before the caps went in?
2) With EVE's physics simulation, the number crunching is far more intense than a FPS.
3) Just Cause had a ton of players but it was client based? Uh.. no thanks. http://lmgtfy.com/?q=%22Never+trust+the+client.%22

Edit: Niiice. LMGTFY has a PS2 ad on the front end.

...And games like EVE don't have landscapes, trees, river, sea, cloud shadow, dirt, rocks, pebbles, grass...etc

(I mean, implementing 500 players in space-based game is always easier than implementing 500 players on the same map at ground level in FPS )

And as for the JC2 video : where's 200+ players on screen without lag?

But that's all client side. The real issue is how the server side handles things. The important parts of EVE and PS2 are server based. JC is client based. PS1 could handle tons of players on screen at once (more pre-cap); I remember doing raids in EQ1 a decade ago with a few hundred people in the same place (RZ comes to mind) and the game was still playable.

It's all about the server side of things and how that's handled. JC can't really be compared since the game client heavy. Never trust the client.

BTW the game sucked. looked nice but had some huge conception flaws that where probably not his fault.

Higby said the PS2 continents are bigger then PS1. From what I've seen so far, they don't seem that much bigger. When Totalhilabut took a flight and the showed us on the map how far that was, it still seemed the same as PS1. So my conclusion is that PS2 continents are only slightly bigger then PS1.

Cool story bro! Anything else about this community created mod to JC2 you want to share?

If that's true then its kind of hacker paradise though so would never work for competitive gaming.

I don't think they are aiming for anything competitive. It's a multiplayer mod that can handle over a thousand players for a singleplayer game, which is pretty impressive in itself, even if someone bothers to make some hacks.

At our peak of 1000 players, the server used 2 CPU cores (2.93 GHz), 90 MB of RAM, 5 MB of disk space and 35 mbit per second.

We are working on improving the CPU usage and try to further optimize the bandwidth usage to make sure they are reasonable.

no kuukl im good, read the discussion and watched the video. i agree. if u can mod a single player game to do this then i have high hopes for the future of mmos when the next generation of engines designed to do it from the ground up come out. such as forgelight.

It's good that you recognize your condition.

http://www.jc-mp.info/index.php/Test...blic_Test_.235

Public Test #5 ... Within 30 minutes of bringing the server up we had once again hit 1000 players, the player count continued to climb to a further 1320 players once again smashing our previous record for concurrent connected players.
