It gives me confidence that the technology is physically there to support that many players on one map and one server. Hell, even the gameplay looks smooth and polished. I've heard that there could be up to 5000 players in one map too. Obviously Planetside will be better but anybody ever do both the JC2 multiplayer beta as well as the PS2 tech test? How do they compare? Well, maybe nothing related to PS2 (NDA), but how does JC2 compare to what we're expecting of PS2?

Not even a multiplayer game by design...... Im really impressed by the numbers it manages to pull off. Goes to show what a couple off coders with too much free time can do

Looks nearly identical to GTA IV free-roam, but with more players (never actually saw a huge amount of people on-screen at once... so I'd take the 1.3k players number with a grain of salt).
Edit: so it looks like the game is single player only, and this "massive" multiplayer aspect is a mod that you need. So it's not 1st party. I'm guessing the mod only has a single server for everybody, thus the large population numbers. You can pick the game up on Steam for $15, though. Might be worth a look. http://community.eveonline.com/devbl...log&nbid=28640 Two devblogs about an EVE system called Jita, which almost always will have a population of over 1000 nowadays. I realise JC2, PS2 and EVE are totally different games, but there are nice graphs, lots of numbers and a picture of the server hardware with more Devblogs linked as to how they try to accomodate thousands of people killing each other in one server. I realise these guys know Jita is busy and have been working on improving that for years, but i don't think we're going to see (hopefully) much of a problem if its 666v666v666+1 on each continent...Biggest EVE-O fight was over 3300 in one system Last edited by Atlas; 2012-08-02 at 02:25 PM. |

2000 players on EVE and 2000 players on Planetside 2 wouldnt even be close to comparable for myriads of reasons, though.
EDIT: What Sephirex said. Also in addition PS2 actually has something in the game world except a black screen with a few stars here and there The ships are also way less to render than the soldiers. All abilities are also autotargeted with CDs and you dont even freely control the ship. The two cant be compared at all in this regard.

Yeah EVE also has Time Dilation that makes a 2000 man fight feel like running through 3 ft of mudd... No twitch mechanics, but I do see atlas's point (Bobby Atlas? Moar chicken?) just the fact they are interacting directly on the same server and have been doing so for years helps enforce that fact that this is possible.
