Phoenix Sniping against infantry. I can understand shooting the missiles at a MAX or a tank, but being shot as infantry was pointless for the shooter and nothing more than utterly annoying for the victim.
Many people won't miss the BFR. I'll be happy to see it gone too, but it wasn't a huge problem for me. It wasn't my cup of coffee, but it was definitely a good support fire vehicle. What I won't miss is the huge damage, super ranged, damage through walls Particle Cannon. That was a beast and it never played nice with my tanks & Threshers.. I also won't miss viruses, specifically NTU Drain and Disable Radar. |

Infantry combat in just about every form. So much of it was broken and poorly designed:
Snipers and AV dominated outdoor combat, HA and thumper/rocklet spam dominated indoor combat, bases were camp-fests with horrible flow and level design, and there was little in-between. A lot of people have commented how PS2 maps look too much like TDM maps, but I fail to see how that is really a problem (as they are based around objectives of course.) If I could summarize my dislikes (they aren't THAT many) with one statement, it would be that I would have never played planetside if it wasn't an MMO. In an 8v8 or 16v16 player environment, it's mechanics would have been a joke. That may seem like an unfair comparison, and I agree Planetside would not show it's true, awesome features in that scenario, but every game needs to be built on a solid foundation of basic gameplay that is fun and intuitive. Planetside was a great game built on poor foundations, because if we took the shooting mechanics of the game (most important in an fps, naturally) and isolated them, I doubt we'd like what we found. Planetside was a game that relied far too much on its innovation as an MMOFPS for its success, but when you get down to brass tacks its mechanics were sub-par. Fortunately, by all accounts Planetside 2 seems to have avoided repeating this mistake by a very wide margin. |

I didn't like BFRs either. I am a little worried about the direction they're taking with tanks though in PS2, with the main guns being controlled by the driver - sounds like they're just making a new BFR in a different shape, really. But I suppose I'll see how it pans out in beta....

The thing that drags the visual side of the game down significantly however, is the texture work. A lot of the game's textures are horrendously low res and complete eye-sore, which is a shame. Still, a quantum leap ahead of PS1 obviously. |
