Edit: *Sigh* Post and then discover you had 4 other images that would have worked better. Such is life. Also, Hamma normally disapproves of this kind of shenaniganry which will help you understand what happened if several people in this thread get removed from the forums. Which would be most ironic given the thread topic.

I have a better idea. How about the default is we DON'T see swearwords or their placeholders at all, which would leave much of the screen blank when you talk.
Then, if we felt some craving, some desperate need, to see obscenity-laden drivel on the screen, we could option it ON. And have an auto-ignore function for people who used certain word combinations, too, that they used to bypass the sewer-mouth filters.

Offending people stopped being a consideration when laws about assault and battery started to be enforced. For a quick example of what happens when they aren't enforced, I stopped flipping people off after I got shot for it. For a more on topic example, my history teacher in high school told us of one time he was having lunch in a park with some friends when a kid started running his mouth. A man ran over to the kid and started kicking his shit in. Afterwords my teacher went over and asked the guy what was going on. He replied that if the kid wanted to use adult language then he should be ready to take responsibility for the consequences.

That is to say, if you use a swearword from a language I don't understand. That has no effect on me (obviously), except that which I can understand from your tone/body language. However, if you use a word which you and I both know is intended to give offense, then both you and I know you have just given me offense... That's the point of the words, and the point of society setting 'offensive' words apart. Now obviously some words, in some contexts, have various levels of offensiveness. If I say, "This fucking Chinese food is delicious!" That's not meant to give offense, clearly. Now, if I say, "You fucking Chinese fucks are fucking bastards!" Clearly there the intention is to offend. Hence, the use is 'offensive.' Not because my vocal cords vibrated in a specific manner, but because I used words in a context which was understood by both parties to be offensive (assuming the 'Chinese fucks' understand English). That's basically a fundamental cornerstone of language, and society in general. This is also why I think kids shouldn't swear, as they are less likely to understand how to properly use words in an offensive/non-offensive context. As for censorship in-game... I guess I'll be the one to say I get 'offended' by people spewing 'offensive' things in general chat. I'm not talking about someone using swear words, but rather people genuinely being offensive. (I think most of us here are capable of understanding the difference) For me, it comes down to the fact that I play this game for fun, I don't play it to deal with people spewing vile, hateful, bigotry, etc in a general chat channel. Sure I can /ignore, but let's not pretend that when someone's being disruptive in the channel it's just that one person, their shit takes over the whole channel, as everyone responds to them... So I certainly agree there should be moderation/censorship in games. War game or not, this is supposed to be a form of entertainment; and I don't appreciate having to deal with such shit as a side-effect of just playing a game I enjoy.
