Mock up of the hex territory map

Put this together while I work on my tactics and strategy site, thought I would share it and get some feedback. This is Desolation so is apparently smaller than the average PS2 continent (just saving me some work).

Few questions to you guys:
  1. Hex size about right, I made it so a base has 5-7 hexes based on dev comments?
  2. I dont have hexes for territory which has a centre point around water, which made sense to me, agree?
  3. I am wondering about merging the hexes for the facilities, towers and warp gates, rather than having them separate as they are now, so you capture all the related hexes rather than them in parts potentially? Edit - Now done

That makes me really nauseous. I really hope the PS2 map doesn't look like that.

Also, I think the bases take up 5-7 Hexes because they're much larger in PS2 than they were in PS1.

Take a look, if you haven't already at the Global Agenda AvA system.
Here's a pic of one of the maps:

I would imagine that important structures will be merged into one large hex, would make things more manageable.

Yeah... I think the size of the bases will be a lot larger. So that will drive the size of the hexes up considerably.

But it's hard to know for sure without some more information.

I'm really interested to hear more about the hex system. It is probably one of the biggest features added to Planetside 2.

Good points all about the size of the PS2 bases, had not thought of factoring that in, not sure I will bother for this mock up though as the continent itself is smaller overall so it may balance out... interesting to see how many bases there will actually be on each continent though if they are much larger than the originals.

I have updated it to have thinner lines between the hexes to make it more transparent overall and less busy, which makes it easier to look at. I'll upload the latest version soon.

Looks good in scale, but to me it would seem that number of hexes would be enough for a continent the size of Ishundar (which also seems similar in size to Indar to me).

Also, I would imagine that the 6 hexes a base and 2-3 hexes a tower occupies would be lumped together into a single block a la Global Agenda style, so they'd be captured all at once.

There we go, added in some more detail and attempted to merge the tower/facility hexes, but it looks a little crappy as I've not got a decent solution to making it other than Powerpoint!

Lets the turn-based game begin

Btw as i understand that hexagrid is only underlying structure, and final territories will be made from several of them (not only around bases and towers).

LOL that's a lot of hexes to make with PowerPoint. But not impossible.

However, I think the bases and towers would be designed to each be pretty symmetrical and at the center of things: bases take up 7 hexes, towers three each, with bases' center being the that central 7th hex, while the towers are at the intersection of 3 hexes. Something like this:

(The base, and the TR and VS warpgates don't quite line up cos I started in the top right corner, but you get the idea.)

Here's a side effect of the hex grid we haven't considered: the map will now have 3 dimensions (the three lines you see above).

Great stuff in this thread! With all this new stuff you guys have been creating it might be worth it to talk about it on AGN again.

Re: Mock up of the hex territory map

An image I edited a while ago, it can be seen in my albums:

This is a real PS2 map (with a small amount of editing):

I give you Indar!

It looks to me as if we have 3 warp gates per cont (1 per empire), and clusters of 3 other bases around them gates. This map is much more populated that it seems. There are many structure on this map. Loads of hexes to capture

I do believe the bottom right is concealing a warp gate as we can only see 2.

You will see in the next image an idea of where I think the 3rd warp gate is:

And another image showing the clusters of the 3 empires (in theory)

The smaller green dots look to me like buildings:

Haven't determined yet - it may be end of January as it's shaping up to be a busy month.
