I'll be in Seattle at the end of August for vacation. Can you recommend some good spots to get a beer? And by good spots, I mean away from the obnoxious frat boys but isn't a hole in the wall. Preferably some place that caters to military.

The Raven is a good spot in Redmond. Reasonably classy place that is usually occupied by business professionals in the late 20's to 30's. Other than that there's an Irish pub in Kirkland. There's some good places in Bellevue but it's kinda yuppie. Good dive bar on the north side of Lake Washington. After that you're either in the clubbing scene downtown or the U-district (college kids). The area is largely divided up by age/economics. College kids, clubbers, yuppies, few places in between.

I don't know of any place in this area that caters to military. You'd probably have to go north or across the sound to one of the naval stations, or go south to Fort Lewis.

I know a lot of places that cater to dead presidents though.

I hope I can still host the Seekrit Beer Tasting at PAX this year. I'm hoping to spend some extra time up there around PAX times.

Depends. There are numerous crawls every year. The Enforcers still put on a tasting, but I'd have to check with Groove and crew to see where it is this year, if it's been planned at all.

It is a beer tasting that I host; I've been doing it for about 4 years at PAX Prime. I talk about it all the time; the seekrit part is the location.

I'm from Mass as well, and own stock in Sam Adams, for reals, lol. Bought it for kicks on my first deployment because I couldnt drink.

I have been lucky enough to be stationed in Germany 2 times, and will have 6-7 years in Europe before I move back stateside.

Moosehead is a great beer, one of my favorites.

Here in Germany, an excellent Dunkelweizen ot ein Hefeweizen ist mein choice of drink.

They have:
Radlers (Rad=Bike.. A gasthaus was running out of drinks to offer to passing/stopping cyclists, and mixed it with lemonade, and it's been a staple on my summers ever since I tried it.)
"Dirty-beer" / Cola-Weizen. It's 1/2 and 1/2 beer and coke.. different..
Seeing more Desperados and Corona over here.. I love Coronas.

I had some Kostritzer-Schwarzbier (Dunkelweizen) when I was in Korea (I bugged them to get AAFES to grab real beer.. they hooked me up, and it began selling out as fast as they couls stock it)
I love the crazy-amount of micro-brews. I travel all over Germany on a weekly basis, and Bavaria stole my taste buds with their Zoigl beers. One Brauhaus, the Büttner Bräu... The "hammer" brew for sure.
