All Servers are seriously messed up! (share your thoughts here)

I played around with the liberator for about 20min logged back in 2 hours later only to find the servers messed up badly. The chat channels wouldnt work (Cept for /tell) and it crashed every 15 minutes. This is bad that SOE rushed the new patch , the liberator patch shouldnt have been released this early just beacuse alot of people logged into test server. Anyone else here have the same experience tonight.

On Markov I went LinkDead in the Sanctuary. Once. No problems after that. Been playing on Johari with the other character for the past several hours. All is fine. Couple great battles on Cyssor too. I'm happy those who post here tend to avoid insulting the Devs. I'm sure it isn't easy creating a computer game, especially an MMO. That coupled with Planetside being the first of it's kind (first person shooter MMO) should clue people into the reason there's been some problems. If only people could see this clearly, see that they're trying to better the game and make our experience while connected more enjoyable.

I suspect they are fixing it.

Hopefully they leave patches up on the test server for longer periods now

They're on top of it looking for a solution, but, man I've never had so many crashes as I've had tonight. I can sometimes expect one or two and occasionally none at all, but tonight I simply lost count.

Hehehe, and what'd I tell you about the doors?

I logged in, and the doors into the HART bldg wouldn't open for anyone.

I'm freaking psychic!

I don't know much about computer programming. Can someone explain to me how, for example the liberator patch can create other problems? I guess what I"m asking is how does other code get screwed with when they're messing with just doors or the lib?

Imagine you've written a 2,000 word essay. It's a very good essay. Every sentence fits with the next and the previous one. Each paragaph makes sense by itself and in the entireity of the work.

Now imagine that you have to add a new concept or phrase in there. Just a small one, mind.

Because everything is so structured, that new concept causes ripples. The first paragraph no longer makes sense because of a line in the third. On the second page a word needs changing on one line because it alters the meaning of three words 2 lines away.

So you move a few words and sentences around. Things make sense, but the structure isn't as good as it was. It's readable - it's comprehendable, but is quite right. You need to start refining again. So you start to move things around again...

That's how I imagine the PS coding situation to be.

I guess that's how things work if you follow no coding standards, never test, never debug, and finish up with a "oh, if it compiles, it's probably done, throw it on the patch server and let's head to the pub - don't forget the company mastercard, I need to get some Jager shots in before noon."

Some of these blatant, game-stopping bugs would have been caught if there was any debugging going on over there. Remember that patch that ruined a lot of people's text readability for a day? How many people had to sign off on a UI preferences file being added to the patch server before it was put up? How many people actually thought "hey, wait, why would that be part of this critical patch?" How many people actually tested the patch before it went live?

I'm sure the male models with female voices one just happened to fall through the cracks as well..

Server lag is excusable and minor bugs are excusable. There's just so many crocks of crap getting thrown up on the patch server these days that it's not even amusing any longer.

Can't sleep.

One of the key things you do to prevent cascading scenarios (no, not resonance cascase scenarios) of bugs is to make sure everything is compartmentalized in such a way that if something goes wrong at point A, it shouldn't affect entirely unrelated parts of the program.

..and that brings me to versioning. Why is it that old bugs routinely get squashed and brought back next patch? Is anyone keeping track of these and analyzing the issues inherent in rolling back a version when the next giant crash bug occurs?

QA, damn it. QA. If sprite decided to tinker with the tropical sprite remix formula and accidently tossed in some anthrax between the corn syrup and red #5, I don't think it would be acceptable to say "hey, we're running a major operation here - shit happens, okay?"

Another thing is 90% of the time these problems DO NOT SHOW until the server is put under the normal load. Eventually they will work out a failsafe way to release patches without a ton of problems.

But as with any MMO, its going to take them a month or two to iron things out. Just be patient, they will fix it

BTW, lets compare PSU to PS.

If powda was to go in and modify some of the backend features of PSU, when not thinking about the rest of PSU. It could cause problems. Case in point, when we were installing the new PSU we realised the forums were using part of our main site functions (for the quote) when we removed that the forums went kaput.

Its on a much smaller scale, but the idea is the same. Remove code here, add there.. problems come up elsewhere.

Hehehe, I saw this comming from a mile away, thats why I have taken this time to take a break from Planetside (still subscribed, just not playing ) so that I won't be frustrated by the bugs that will inevitably come from adding lots of new content.

is probably the number 1 most hilarious comment about bug squashing ever made about any game. Absolutely hilfuckingarious.
