Both have 8 rendering pipelines, but the 9700 has a faster core clock speed. I've been told if you go the ATI route, get the pro cards. Well worth the extra $$.
If I were you, I'd be happy with the 9500pro.

If you can swing the extra $80, get the 9700Pro. You'll have a nice video card for the next couple of years with no fear of anything coming close to it's performance.

It depends on if you plan on upgrading soon or not and what your current system is... If you have a slower CPU and don't plan on upgrading soon there won't be much benefit in getting the 9700 because it will be slowed down by your cpu.
