Playing Planetside on Linksys router WITHOUT GIVING UP SECURITY?

Okay, here's my setup: 2.5 ghz pentium 4, 1 gb ram, 128 geforce (aka plenty fast enough for this game).
I have SBC yahoo DSL that I can get 150 kilobytes/sec down 15 kilobytes up.
I'm behind a linksys router.

The problem: I get a disconnect (either "You've stopped recieving packets" or "you've left our world") *exactly* every 12 minutes from starting my game session. I've read Moz's sticky post about how to fix this, but I find it preposterous that I have to open up all ports from 1024-65535 to play a single game that I pay $13/month for, it would be like having no security at all. (doesn't anybody else realize this?!)

SOE blaims it on my ISP (when I wrote them an email) but that seems absurd because other games such as Counterstrike and Unreal Tournament 2003 runs flawlessly without compromising my security.

And also, why would Sony "not officially support firewalls"? Aren't the majority of highbandwith gamers (whoe care about security)behind firewalls? I have ZoneAlarm Pro, but planetside still gives me identical problems with ZoneAlarm shutdown.

what i use is zonealarm, it's freee and it works well, just when starting PS back up make sure you hit shit + R, then shift + y.

that won't do a thing if there is no security at the router level, it'll still allow planetside to freely open any port, leaving it completely vulnerable.

DOES ANYBODY CARE ABOUT SECURITY ANY MORE?!?!

Hello,

I have a Linksys router, and I do not need to change any settings for PS to work. I'd check into your ISP frankly. There is no need to open ports. If it works on my system, it should work on yours. Usually opening ports is a bunch of BS. I have the exact same game you have, and my game works fine. It means you don't need to open jack port wise! I'm not sure what it is, but I know it isn't port requirements.

Keep yourself secure. No game is worth disabling security unless you want to pull your hair out from assholes screwing with your system.

Yeah, I also use a Linksys Router and I have never had this problem. I believe Sony has a list of routers that were tested and supported to work with PS without any modifications and Linksys was one of them. Other than that I'm not sure what the problem could be other than ISP. If you want to check if it is the router just open to ports one time and see if you still get the message after 12 minutes, then you will know what the problem is.

I also had the problem you discribe and I also have a Linksys router. I updated my Firmware and that fixed all my problems.

Try disabling your "Computer Browser" service through services.msc. (Start -> Run -> type services.msc -> set Computer Browser to Disabled) It sends info through a network once every 12 min I think. (I'm assuming you're running WinXP.)

That's just a thought. Not even sure why that would be causing problems, unless it's trying to hit the network and receiving issues with the security you've set up, which in turn is causing PS to freak out.
