It could be more leathal because you can have cyberneticly ehnanced muscles behind it in combonation with an increadably sharp edge or chainsaw.
In reality, just to make them somewhat useful.

why? because a bullet may pass right through your body, or hit a nonlethal area, and may not put you into shock, or cause massive bleeding. A chain blade will shred alotta flesh, and cause MASSIVE trauma by severing so many nerve ends. An amazingly sharp knife like the MAG cutter will cause a line of damage, severign arteries and also makes a bigger wound. The force blade would prob just cut thoguh armor and flesh like butter, going deep into the body for some mondo organ damge, but would cauterize small wounds, inducing less trauma. It's also easier to hit an enemy in your face with a knife than an assault rifle.
It would be nice if you could attach a knife to an empire specific rifle only and thus if you ran into an enemy, it would inflict knife equivalent damage.

True, but throwing a knife would do nothing, most people will be wearing armor. You'd have to throw the knife pretty damn hard.
