Game requirement: CPU, Card, RAM, Hard Disk!

My PC's setup:
AMD Athlon XP 1800+
Geforce FX 5900 Ultra
512M Ram
80G Hard disk.

I set my Planetside to: 1280x1024, highest configuration.
The framerate i got is 40-100fps, but, sometimes, the game runs very slow in 3-10 secs. Like when the door opens. And, the continents load very slow now, takes me almost 2-3 mins. And crashs to desktop sometimes. And when i am playing the game, the hard disk LED keeps flashing.

Here is my question:
What should i do to improve it? Is it a hard disk problem? or 512M ram is not enough to meet the requirement for 1280x1024 high?

Someone give me a clue.

Thanks

Only bottleneck is your RAM. PS can chew as much as 600MB in the really huge moshing zergfests - if you upgrade to 1GB of RAM you shoud notice the slowdown disappear.

You can decrease load time and RAM consumption by setting it to not pre-cache textures, this will also increase game stability. However, kiss your fps goodbye. I am surprised you get the performance you do on maximum settings with only 512MB RAM. Get more RAM, or decrease your settings to medium, 1024x768.

500MHz processor? that's too low, you need a 2000MHz or above

1000GH Pentium 4 (it runs great on that! )

512 RDRAM

GeForce 4 Ti4200 128MB

20GB hard disk

ADSL (512KB)

And guess what?

FPS has never been better .

I just tweaked by computer to the maximum (without hurting it, ofcourse. Well not too much ), and lowered graphic settings to the minimum (I still run in on a 1024X768 thu, and viewing distance isn't at the minimum, but is pretty close to is).

Don't feel like tweaking?

Then format your computer, it does wonders to your FPS.
A fresh install of WinXP, everything that is essencial and PlanetSide.

2 ghz is a lil overdoing it, but it wont run on 500mhz. I run on a 1.6 and it goes pretty good. Upping your ram would help but, it wont really do any good until you get a better processor...

Edit: Sorry mixing up posts, that advice is for the one with the 500mhz processor. To the first question, RAM should be your answer

At least double the RAM you have and drop it to 1024x768.

1.5Ghz is all you need especially with that 5900. The most important thing for Planetside tho is RAM. You need a gig to run it without any problems

Sys14 you might have a problem I have seen a lot of people have with Geforce cards.

They install the card and the driver for it but the forget to install the AGP driver for their motherboard and as a result end up running a 4x or 8x AGP card in PCI mode which means information is passed to and from the card very slowly, that could explain your problem with large outdoor areas.

You can check your agp settings by looking at the gfx card settings on your screen display settings page in windows. If you click the nvidia adaptert tab it should list the agp speed on there. If it mentions PCI mode at all then you'll need to set the motherboard to use AGP.

I've only really seen people have this problem using VIA chipset motherboards, if you are the agp driver for the motherboard is part of the 4in1 driver which you should get on a disk with your motherboard or alternatively you should have o trouble finding one online with a search on google.

If that's not your problem I apoligise for the lengthy post.

Also for all you RAM short folk go to

www.blackviper.com

And use his services suggestions, you can clear up 50-140 RAM from the OS.

I get 25-250 fps, average 115fps (depending up situations). I play at 1024x768 with all settings equal to full except flora which is low.

My System:

WinXP Pro SP1
Intel P4 2.8GHz (512kb cache, HyperThreading)
SoundFusion MAX sound
1GB DDR RAM
Asus P4C 800 Deluxe Mobo
Ati Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB RAM, latest Catalyst drivers
640k DSL (via a LAN)
120GB Serial ATA drive w/ 8MB cache

I also use PowerStrip to adjust my PCI latency so my video card latency is 64 (default was 248 for my Radeon and when I had my old GeForce 3 card) and my NIC latency is 32.

MoJo|Night: thank you so much for the information, i checked the setting, it's 8X AGP, i think the problem is on the ram. I am going to buy two 512mb ram and sell my 2x256mb ones.

Pilgrim: thank you for the information, i think that will help me so much.

Thank you all you guys, i really appreciated all your helps.
