Cool Writing a PlanetSide Novel - Vol. 1 (VERY LONG)

Heres volume one, enjoy.

PlanetSide - Prelude - Retaking Mulac

The day was a late afternoon on Hossin, near the Technology Plant, Mulac. Mulac had been previously captured by the Vanu Sovereignty and was being held by an elite platoon of Vanu Marines. Through the fog peered a sniper staring through the scope of his Bolt Driver, with the eyes of a killer, those that seemed to be used to looking at death.

He quickly zoomed in on the walls of Mulac, with his powerful scope mounted on the Bolt Driver, he quickly spotted a Command Rank 5 Vanu commander barking commands at nearby foot soldiers. He could see the Vanu CR5's facial expressions through his scope, a light smirk of irony that the sniper had seen before. Suddenly his basic training came through his mind, he remembered his drill sergeant telling him to gently squeeze the trigger to get a more accurate shot. The Vanu CR5 wasn't moving, he had an excellent shot at the head, he took the opportunity to scope the shot and squeeze the trigger, a loud report resounded from the muzzle of the long rifle as a Bolt flew. It must have been God that led the Bolt to the target, because the Vanu CR5 moved slightly but the Bolt still found its mark upon the Vanu CR5's torso.

The Bolt sent the Vanu reeling over the base walls, while falling to his demise the sniper fired a last killing shot in the head, sending the Vanu CR5 into a vivid flip, just before it all went black for him as he struck the dirt ground of Mulac. Once the sniper fired the killing shot, he pulled the radio from his backpack and called his Commander, notifying him that the Vanu leader in the area had been terminated.

Since the Vanu were dismayed with the lack of a leading Commander, the New Conglomerate CR5 quickly used his Command Uplink Device to scan the area for enemies, once the uplink command had been processed, he saw on the overhead map that there were several troops, and enemy vehicles sitting in the courtyard of Technology Plant Mulac. He quickly consulted with other Commanders regarding the battle plan in which should be executed in the retaking of this Technology Plant.

The Commanders hastily decided that the outside force should be bombed by Liberators from the Naum Dropship Center. The Liberators quickly gathered in the courtyard of Naum, there were a total of four. Once they had all been assembled, they quickly hovered to flight ceiling and prepared for the attack mission on Mulac, they were now awaiting strike confirmation. The Commanders broadcasted that once the courtyard of Mulac had been bombed, ground troops were to quickly move in the Vehicle Tunnel, and terminate any internal forces that the Vanu may have.

The New Conglomerate Commanders confirmed the strike, the Liberators were to move in immediately. The bombers assimilated into formation and prepared to drop, the Liberator crews radioed each other deciding on formation, and bomb types that would be used. It was decided that two Liberators would use 'Tank Busters' for anti-armor, and the other two would use 'Anti-Personnel' bombs for cleaning up any Vanu infantry that were unfortunate enough to walk outside during this onslaught.

The Liberators quickly approached the target zone, and slowed to bomb speed. Just as they arrived, the Vanu sent Reavers to the flight ceiling to take down the Liberators, the tailgunners of the Liberators worked in a concerted effort to take the Reavers down with relative ease. Seeing this, the Vanu had infantry suit up in Starfire MAX configs, in a last ditch effort to take down the Liberators. They stood no chance, the awaiting foot soldiers outside the Technology Plant abruptly fired Phoenix missiles into the base, quickly terminating the Starfire MAXes before they could even fire a single shot.

The Liberators were now approaching the drop zone, the bomb bay doors abruptly unlatched, and the bombing campaign of Mulac had commenced. The bombs released from the bay, exploding as they struck the once clean ground of Mulac, sending infantry flying in fragments. The bombs also struck nearby tanks, sending pieces of shrapnel and Magrider careening.

The campaign had been a success, every moving thing outside of Mulac, in the courtyard, was terminated. Infantry insertion was now in progress. The Commander hastily assessed the damage of the courtyard after the bombing campaign, and decided to send an infiltrator in first, for recon purposes.

The infiltrator suited up in his cloak suit, and activated it by inputing his empire access code, he was now completely invisible. He equipped his REK (Remote Electronics Kit), and approached the vehicular tunnel of Mulac. He quickly hacked into the IFF (Identify Friendly Foe) lock on the door, and entered.

He immediately saw an approaching Magrider, coming from the vehicle tunnel, headed outside. He radioed the Commander and notified him of the approaching Magrider. He also noticed that there was much activity within this base, it appeared they were mustering forces for retaliation. The infiltrator entered the lower vehicle terminal door to see a Command Rank 4 Vanu, shocked to see that his superior had been terminated in battle, and that battle Command now rested on his shoulders.

The infiltrator now backed away, back into the vehicle tunnel, and radioed his superior once again, "Recon one, this is Recon one reporting from the inside of Mulac", "Go ahead recon one", "I have spotted the next in command, a Vanu CR4", "You have a green light on the termination of this commander", "Roger".

The infiltrator, now high on adrenaline quickly equipped his MAG Scatter pistol, and approached the Vanu CR4, who was talking to another fellow NC operative?! Shocked to see this, the infiltrator rapidly checked the military records of this operative. He was found guilty on multiple counts of treason, his name was unknown, his only source of identification was his calling card that he left with his co-conspirators on the Vanu, a locker full of Jackhammers.

After reading the military records of this operative, the infiltrator immediately radios his Commander with this newly found information. The Commander, pleased to hear about the discovery of this operative, without giving a second thought, orders the execution of the Vanu CR4 and the operative. The infiltrator re-equipped his MAG Scatter, and slowly approached behind the still speaking Vanu CR4.

The infiltrator still had Armor-Piercing slugs in his MAG Scatter, from a previous assault on a well-armored Commander, who was in a MAX suit. He rapidly changed ammo types from AP to standard, and the NC operative realized this sound, and the coward abruptly ran in the alternate direction, heading for the stairwell, leading to the Command Console of Mulac. Keeping his cool, the infiltrator noticed the Vanu CR4 was in shock, and was wondering what had sent the operative running away.

The infiltrator grasped the pistol in preparation for the tremendous recoil of the MAG Scatter pistol, and firmly pulled the trigger, sending a barrage of shotgun pellets careening for the back of the Vanu CR4. Each pellet found their mark, striking the Vanu CR4 in the spine, laying him out on the floor, dead. Upon hearing the report of the MAG Scatter (a very distinct sound to Vanu), the entire facility was on high alert.

The infiltrator, familiar with being searched for, radioed the Commander, and gave him the word, to send in the forces.

The sniper must have been a flukey muppet if he was aiming for the head and hit the torso after the CR5 moved.

Can i make a minor critisism. If you're writing a book don't put in literal references like "CR5." You will limit your reader base to Pside elite. Anyone outside planetside will wonder what the fuck you're going on about, thus rendering your book unpublishable.

This is a good story, well written, But i agree with Terahertz. Instead of using the abbreviation of 'CR5' just say commander, or something like 'Rank Five Commander'. It doesnt matter to PSers, but to anyone who may read your story that doesnt play, it really solves any confusion with this unknown to them abbreviation. Other than that, no complaints. Keep it up!

Great Story but i have only one complaint. You keep jumping back and forth between first and third person veiw witch makes the story feel distant and cold to me.Heres my advice make a few chapters, for example the part about the liberators you should move it to the point of few of the pilot and have him hearing the commands for certain bombs and such of his comm set. and it would be good to hear the vanu point of veiw.

But its a good story and you did better then i would have

Do Lib gunners usually beat reavers? You might want to go into a bit more detail on this fight.

You go into this wierd passive tense-thing every so often. It detracts from the story. Here's one example:

The campaign had been a success, every moving thing outside of Mulac, in the courtyard, was terminated.
You use the words "now", "rapidly/quickly/etc", and "also" too much.

Chapter 1:

PlanetSide - Chapter 1 - Taking the Base

The ground forces commander prepared the troops under his command for infantry insertion at Mulac. The Vanu commander had been terminated, and this was a standard sweep and take mission. The infantry anxiously awaited the command to begin the assault on Mulac.

One infantry struck up a conversation as they waited in the bunker, he was a senior, and he started conversing with a lower, newer grunt, with fresh blue armor. "So, this your first attack?" "Yeah, I've been through basic training, but I've never been in the field" "Well, you're in for a surprise, things get pretty messy out here in the field". Excitedly, the grunt asks, "Hey, your a senior officer right? Tell me one of your war stories!" "Well, I don't know, maybe another time.""Ah! Come on sir!"

"Ok, ok. One time at Hanish on Ishundar, the Terran Republic had taken both towers and they outnumbered us 10 to 1, so we were at an obvious disadvantage, we called in reinforcements from the Sanctuary barracks, but their ETA was 10 minutes, enough time for us to lose the base." "Tell me more!" "OK, we fought off the Terrans with all our might, and fought as hard as--the attack klaxon buzzed loudly--"Here we go, time for war." From sheer anxiety, the new grunt vomited his rations, covering the bunker floor.

"Hey soldier! Watch your spew there!" Wiping his face the grunt repiled,"Sorry about that sir." "Yeah, you should be, don't ever do that again, grab your Jackhammer and follow me."
They both exited the bunker with the rest of the battalion as the attack command was called and formation was made.

They left the bunker and headed for the main entrance, the vehicle tunnel, as they approached the tunnel, Vanu artillery fire shelled the main area, killing three of the soldiers in the battalion. The Sergeant, the main battalion leader barked "Keep moving! This wasn't in basic training!" They all followed, after seeing their comrades fall to the wrath of Vanu technology.

The Corporal, second in command of this battalion, shouted, "Open the door and blitz down to the secondary door, don't let any stinkin' Vanu get in your way! Then await the Sergeant's further instructions, go go go!" They approached the second vehicle tunnel door and waited for the Sergeant to come from behind, he shouted "Open the door and lay down some cover fire for the Combat Engineers! They'll blow the blast doors open for us, then we follow!"

The Combat Engineers laid some Boomer heavy explosives on the second vehicle tunnel blast door and awaited the blast command from the Sergeant. The Sergeant shouted "Hit the deck, its gonna blow!" The Combat Engineers detonated each of their Boomer HE mines simultaneously to blow the door down with ease. Once the debris cleared, the foot soldiers made their way in, mowing each stunned Vanu soldier down.

The battalion ran a weapons check, and saw what each soldier had equipped, and made the decision that the Jackhammer wielding soldiers should be the first in, while the others laid down covering fire with their Gauss and Sweeper Shotguns. The new grunt from the bunker, having been weapon certified in the Jackhammer, was shocked to find that he would be one of the pioneer attackers in this internal conflict. The Sergeant pointed at the new grunt and said "You, get with the program!".

The grunt replied "Yes sir." and charged ahead with the rest of the Jackhammer wielding soldiers. Now feeling more comfortable, being with his fellow comrades, got into the feel of war. The new grunt got over confident and charged ahead of the group, just as a Vanu with a Lasher went strafing across the hallway, letting several orbs fly. Two missed their mark, but the third didn't, they struck the new grunt directly in the chest, laying him out before his comrades. The superior officer behind the new grunt, the one that was telling him the war story earlier in the bunker, quickly aimed and fired one Jackhammer slug at the kamikaze Vanu, striking him in the lower right leg, accounting for his aim, the superior officer aimed higher and let another slug fly, hearing the resounding boom of the Jackhammer, several more Vanu came running from the higher rank meeting room of Mulac.

Once the Vanu from the Superior Meeting Room exited into the corridor the troops were in, they realized they were cornered. Although, no problem goes without a sum, the very last Jackhammer troop in the battalion pulled a plasma grenade from his side pouch and let it fly. The explosion set each Vanu ablaze with compressed plasma, eventually killing each Vanu soldier and Commander.

The Corporal repositioned himself in the building, straight
ahead was the door leading to the Command Console. The door to the immediate left led to the Air Vehicle terminal. Several Vanu soldiers awaited outside the vehicle tunnel, primarily Vanu snipers, firing on the Mulac tower. The only Jackhammer grunt still alive crept outside behind each Vanu sniper, letting a Jackhammer slug fly into the back of each. The last Vanu sniper realized what was happening and pulled his Beamer sidearm out, in a last ditch effort to stop the attacking NC.

He let a few energy bolts fly from his Beamer, one found its mark, striking the NC in the leg, merely slowing him down. Now more pissed off, the Jackhammer wielding NC plowed down the Vanu sniper with his vengful Jackhammer. Now surrounded by corpses of fallen Vanu, the NC grunt loots the backpacks of each Vanu, obtaining his own Lasher, Pulsar, and Beamer.

The NC grunt now walks back inside, to find the rest of his battalion in a bloody mess, lying on the floor in front of the Command Console. The grunt, nervous enough, walks over to a computer in the Air Vehicle terminal and pulls up the flight log. Four bombers and three Reavers scheduled a flight pattern about an hour ago, just before the NC bombing campaign. He then checked the return flight log, they were scheduled to arrive at Mulac in five minutes. 'Five minutes?!?' he thought to himself. The NC grunt looked around desperately at his fallen comrades, looking for some sort of anti-aircraft weapon.

Luckily, he discovered a Phoenix and some rockets in the backpack of the fallen Sergeant. He abruptly loaded a rocket into the cumbersome Phoenix, and went out on the vehicle terminal once again, where the fallen Vanu snipers still lay, to await the arrival of the enemy aircraft.

The grunt could hear the dull roar of the bombers coming in, they were strangely at bomb speed. 'Hm, wonder why they are at bomb speed. They're coming in for landing aren't they? Aren't bombers sitting ducks at bomb speed anyway, they must not know I'm here yet. If that's so, then I can knock them all out without them knowing what hit them!' he thought to himself once again.

He heard the clicking of a radio, behind the dull roar of the bombers engines. He prepared to fire a Phoenix missile after the Liberator, the Vanu bomber. He prepared for the loud report of the Phoenix, and fired on sight. Once fired, the NC grunt switched to missile cam, via the camera mounted on the Phoenix.

As he was guiding the missile at the Vanu bomber, he noticed the bomb bay doors opening, shocked at this sight, he detonated the Phoenix in mid-air and tried to run back inside. But the NC operative was blocking the door, with radio in hand, through the blast door, the NC grunt heard a faint broadcast "I've got him blocked outside, he's on the terminal bom--(radio static)."

The bomber, the sound which was a dull roar before, was now a whining noise, much like a shrieking banshee. The bomb bay doors were now completely open, and several bombs were coming down upon him. He knew the end was coming. He radioed back to the tower and said "Everyone is dead! All of them!", just as the bombs struck ground, detonating all the area around him.

The infiltrator, still in the vehicle tunnel, after hearing all of the gunfire, now that it had ceased, decided to go upstairs and check it out. He slowly crept up the stairs and found his way past the fallen battalion members and then the Vanu snipers. He noticed the smirking NC operative still sitting at the door, and decided to wait to see what he was about to do.
